I sincerely appreciate your letter of 30 April., which reached
me a few days ago. The thought that I could have forgotten you is
certainly far from the mark. Not only do I remember vividly our
days together in Paris in 1919 -- and Y often read over the kind re-
marks you made about me in "Peace Making", even though we differed
on the Bulgarian boundary question but I am an avid reader of what
you write.
What you have to ;say about Foster is sincerely appreciated.
During these last difficult weeks, as long as he could read or be read
to, he found deep satisfaction in the evidence of real understanding of
what he had been striving for, very particularly as expressed in your
country, and also quite widely from the other countries of the free
world.
which has been followed here, has served as an antidote.
We have had our '' Montgomerys" too and it is one of the
features of a free society that we should understand on both sides of
the water, that there is no power, nor should there be, to throttle
such expression.
I don't think it has been taken too seriously here, certainly
not in important quarters, but naturally the reaction of your press,

In the normal course of events, I shall probably be in
England late this summer or early fall, and it would be a great
pleasure to have a reunion with you. Unfortunately, this seems
to be generally a bad time on account of holidays and the like, but
it is about the only time I can get away, after the adjournment of
Congress and before the active autumn season comes on. In any
event, I shad try to get in touch with you. probably in early
September.
