In particular, I should like to call your attention to the
existence of the Guided Missiles Intelligence Committee (GMIC),
a subcommittee created by the Intelligence Advisory Committee
very recently for the express purpose of ensuring the fullest and
most effective effort in obtaining and publishing intelligence on
this subject. The GMIC has its headquarters in the Pentagon and
includes representatives of the services and of this Agency. Its

As I am sure you are aware, we have prepared two coordinated
National Intelligence Estimates dealing with Soviet progress in
the field of guided missiles, NIE 11-6-54 and NIE 11-12-55. These
estimates were based on every scrap of intelligence then available.
However, that intelligence is by no means satisfactory to us, and
we are engaged in an intensive collection effort in which the GMIC
is playing a major coordination role.
