connection with your activities with the Institute of American
Strategy, might be interested and wining to undertake to assist

Dear Mr. Sullivan:
On behalf of Mr. Dulles, I want to thank you for your
recent letter about our mutual interest in teaching courses
on the dangers of Communism.
As you probably know by now, Mir. Dulles has talked
directly to Frank Barnett about bringing the resources of the
Richardson Foundation and the Institute for American Strategy
into play an this project.
Mr. Dulles has noted with great interest the fact that
your 1%1 Conference will be devoted to this aspect of American
education. It is too early for him to make a firm commitment
to appear at the Conference, but I suggest that you renew the
invitation at a later date.
a
Sincerely.

My dear Mr. Dulles:

In reference to your letter of September 21 to
Mr. Frank R. Barnett and his reply of September
29.
We were particularly interested in your interest
in teaching courses on the dangers of Communism
in our schools and colleges. When we have a look
at what happened in Hitlerts Germany, Mussolini's
Italy, Stalin's Russia, the student riots in Latin
America, in Castro's Cuba, and the riots in San
Francisco a few months ago, it Is apparent that
the Communists and dictators realize the impor-
tance of indoctrinating the youth in the various
countries. And then, too, the apathy here inour
own country particularly among our educators,
businessmen and labor leaders is appalling.
It was for these reasons that our Institute became
interested in devoting our 1961 Conference to the
educators throughout the country. I believe General
Spivey, superintendent of the Culver Military Academy,
has outlined many of the thoughts that we are
attempting to incorporate into our 1961 Conference,
which will convene April 10, 11 and 12 here in
Chicago. Copy of General Spiveyts letter is attached
hereto. Our Board of Directors would be delighted
if you would be one of our honored guest speakers
at this Conference.
As a result of our past Conferences and Seminars,
we have been deluged with requests for speakers,
copies of tape recordings of the many eminent
Americans who have participated in this Conference
during the past six years, and other material that
the Institute is producing. I thought you would be
particularly interested in an outline of our past
and present activities which is attached hereto.
We are also enclosing a copy of our 1960 Proceedings
entitled U.S. ECONOMY IN A WORLD OF CONFLICT.

Perhaps at this early date it is difficult
for you to make firm commitments. However,
because of your great interest in this field,
we sincerely hope that you will agree to speak
here at our April Conference next year.
Sincerely yours,
