Mr. Allen W. Dulles,
Washington, D. C.
Dear Allen:
May 5th, 1958
Just before Margaret and I left Chicago
to come up her for a few days, Ahmed Emin Yalman,
editor, publisher, and I judge, owner of"Vatan",
(Fatherland) the best newspaper of Istanbul, came
to see us at our apartment, as we have known him
for many years, and think highly of him. He is
one of the few Turks that seem to be in strong
enough positions to get by with criticisms of some
of the actions of the present regime.
I am writing to you because I am inclined
to think a talk with him by you or some of your
.seniors might elicit information, not only of
Turkey, but of other parts of the Middle East that
might be interesting and perhaps useful.
When he left Chicago, he planned to be in
Washington this week. He can be reached through
the press attache of the Turkish Embassy, who will
know of his plans and whereabouts.
I have read the reports of your recent
public address with great interest. Perhaps yoikr
secretary may have a copy of the release for me.
I should appreciate it. I.shall be back in Chicago
before the end of this week...,

MEMORANDUM FOR THE DIRECTOR
1. This memorandum is for information only.
2. Ahmed Emin Yalman, Turkish editor, had one thought he said he is trying
to impress upon State Department, and which he wanted you to know:
"There is an impasse between the United States and Turkey. We have reached
a roadblock. The impasse.-needs American help to break it. Our economy is in a
bad way. You (America) tell us to straighten it out on our own. We cannot do it
alone. We need America to help. Some uncommitted nations get much help. We are
committed and we need help. No Turk fears a Russian. We are all for America. The
U.S. Military aid missions have done good work. Especially General Arnold. It
costs much money to keep up our military. The American ambassadors have in recent
times been men who are about to retire and they take little interest in getting the
fiscal situation over to the State Department."
3. He said he hoped you would understand how serious is the need for U.S.
help and that Turkey can't solve its problems alone as the U.S. says she must.
4+. He said his book "Turkey in My Time," which the University of Oklahoma
published, is now in its second printing. It is the story of Attaturk.
5. I told him how sorry you were to be on a high level conference when he
arrived and provided him transportation to Connecticut Avenue and H Street for
his next appointment.
6. He saw, he said, Loy Henderson, Messrs. Brewster, Matthews and others
yesterday and has a tight schedule for today.
7. He came to the U.S. with the International Press convention held in
Washington last month and the group toured the U.S. under the guidance of Paul
Block, Jr. of the TOLEDO BLADE. He is staying at the Fairfax Hotel.
8. He will leave Washington tomorrow (Friday, May 9) for New York and thence
fly to Europe enroute to Turkey.
