I regret losing you as the Director of Central Intelligence, but the reasons presented me are so cogent that I have acceded to his request. Your task has been exceptionally well performed, and all my good wishes go with you to your new past. I have directed Rear Admiral Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter to relieve you as of May 1, 1947.
