The Chief of Staff of the U. S. Army has
requested your return to assume important and necessary
duties with the Army fir Forces. I regret losing you as
the Director of Central Intelligence, but the reasons
presented me are so cogent that I have acceded to his
request. Your task has been exceptionally well performed,
and all my good wishes go with you to your new past.
I have directed Rear Admiral Roscoe H.
Hillenkoetter to relieve you as of May 1, 1947.

I have acceded to a request of the Chief of
Staff of the U. S. Army for the return of Lieutenant
General Hoyt S. Vandenberg who has served as the Director
of the Central Intelligence Group since June 10, 1946.
.It is my wish that you serve as Director of
Central Intelligence, and I herewith appoint you to this
position. You will assume your new duties on May 1, 1947.

I have searched our files and have had a check
made of the Executive Registry log and Central Records
file'and the only document pertaining to the "turn over
of duties of DCI" is the copy of letter signed by
the President to you, dated 30 April 1947 -- exactly
as draft attached.
Copy of the signed ltr was :forwarded to Central Records
file and 2 copies were sent to BuPers for inclusion in
your official jacket. There is a copy in your "personnel
file" together with copies of the Presidential nominatior
and the Oath of Office.
