MEMORANDUM FOR MR. JACKSON
Nuclear Energy Division, Office of Scientific Intelligence, submits
its ATOMIC ENERGY INTELLIGENCE SUMMARY for October, which states that:
There appears to be a fairly well publicized effort taking place to
terminate employment of some German personnel in Wismut mining activities.
Nuclear Energy Division comments that if current information on uranium
mining activities by Soviets is correct, it is inconceivable that Soviets
are curtailing their mining activities in Germany, as this area is still
indicated as the most important source of uranium ore to Soviet Union
atomic energy project.
Press reports, but no official information, have been received on
atomic energy plants in North Korea. It is known that large deposits of
monazite are available and were being exploited. Uranium mining has been
reported, but amounts available are considered to be quite small and of
little or no significance.
