LITTON INDUSTRIES 360 North Crescent Drive, Beverly Hills, California 90210 213 273-7860 Litton Col. Barney Oldfield, USAF(Ret) Corporate Director, Special Missions and Projects August 21, 1975 Dear Vernon: It was great to see you here on the tube and then so generously treated and quoted in the Los Angeles TIMES, as I had about given up on the chances that anyone would grant there was another side to the intelligence picture, and creditable and worthy distinction due those engaged in its collection and interpretation. In the Pentagon I used to grumble a lot about the stands of both the Army and the Air Force which were enunciated by various of the chiefs to the effect that they could never 'view as constructive' any story which had to do with intelligence as a profession. One of them told me that he felt it would always just have to live with whatever was thrown at it, and he said it was prob- ably because Joshua's use of agents before Jericho found them taking up with Rahab, the harlot, as a cover a seamy association the craft had never been able to shake! But Rahab's acolyte or not, I thought you said what you did with conviction and well, and I thank you for the forcefulness and forthrightness of it. The account said a couple of radio reporters had been baiting you in a press conference adjunct to your remarks, and I would assume you were lethal in delivering one of your conversational karate chops. Good for you! Strange, but the day you did your thing, I had just finished and mai3Dd a piece called SHAPE: A SENTIMENT AND A STRUCTURE to the Holland magazine, NATO's 15 NATIONS, which will run on SHAPE's 25th birthday next 0001 2 April. In its recount, I was surprised at what busy and mobile cats we were in that time period. ,/ Best regards, tJ Lieutenant General Vernon Walters, USA Deputy Director, Central Intelligence Agency, McLean, Virginia Approved For Release 2006/08/02 : CIA-RDP80R01731 R001900060048-8
