On behalf of the members of the Yale Political Union, it is my distinct pleasure
to invite you to be our guest at Yale during the coming adademic year.
As I hope you are aware -- I optimistically believe our reputation has spread --
the Political Union is a non-partisan forum for political debate and discussion.
It is by far the largest and most active student organization on campus, and
probably the most diverse as well: virtually every possible political viewpoint
is represented in its membership. Each year, the Union hosts a number of speak-
ers of national and international stature, as an integral part of our program
to promote a continuous dialogue at Yale on important issues of current interest.
A few who joined us last year are Archibald Cox, Gore Vidal, Abba Eban, Brendan
Byrne, Clarence Kelley, Gloria Steinem, and Hubert Humphrey; the breadth and
diversity of the Union's speaker program is evident. We would be honored to
have you join this distinguished list in the coming months.
Arrangements with our guest speakers are tailored to provide all involved with
the most worthwhile experience possible. A typical schedule might include an
afternoon press conference with area media or a seminar-style discussion with
students, a reception and dinner with members of the Union and the Yale commun-
ity, and an evening address on a topic of mutual interest, followed by a question-
and-answer discussion period. The entire format is, of course, very flexible,
depending on individual scheduling needs. As to specific dates, almost any
evening, Sunday through Thursday, between September 10 and December 15, or pos-
sibly after New Year, is convenient to the Union. We will, of course, reimburse
your travel expenses and provide overnight accomodations, if you so desire.
Should you have any questions about the Union or the arrangements, please feel
free to contact me at the above address or, after September 1, by phone in New
Haven: 203-777-4343. I look forward to hearing from you, and hope to have the
honor and pleasure of welcoming you to Yale this fall.
Sincerely yours,
Michael K. Stone
President
