The Dallas Council on World Affairs has com- pleted another most successful year. Program in- terest was maintained at an exceptionally high level with many meetings attracting capacity audiences. Membership continued to rise, and support from Les Femmes du Monde Committee continued at high levels. Credit for this remarkable performance by the Council goes to many people. Our special apprecia- tion goes to Mr. R. A. Goodson, your outgoing Presi- dent, whose personal interest, enthusiasm and sup- port are greatly appreciated by all of us. Our warm thanks go to Mrs. Shelby L. Richardson, whose un- tiring efforts, efficiency and gracious personal lead- ership gave the Women's Group one of its finest years. Our special thanks also go to Mrs. Robert E. Gaylord, General Chairman of Les Femmes du Monde Committee, and to the many others on that Commit- tee whose diligence and gracious application com- bined to support our Council's activities with one of the best benefit sales in the history of Les Femmes du Monde. Finally, on behalf of the Council, I wish to thank the many corporations and individuals who supported our Council so generously. The international fame which Dallas holds as a warm and hospitable city has been due in a large part over the past twenty years to the efforts of the many volunteers of the Dallas Committee for Foreign Visitors. This Committee expanded its operations in May by participating in the establishment of a re- gional office at the new Dallas/Fort Worth Interna- tional Airport and made plans to occupy an office in the new World Trade Center. This Committee of vol- unteers continues to be a model for other similar organizations throughout the country. Our thanks .go to each and every member of this wonderful group of people. During the past two decades the Council has come to be known and respected internationally as well as nationally. The Council has brought to Dallas many national and international leaders. And through its Dallas Committee for Foreign Visitors, Dallas has gained an unmatched reputation as a warm, hospitable city. During the year many honors came to the Dallas Committee for Foreign Visitors. A citation was received from the President of the United States as well as letters of praise and support from other high Washington officials. The Committee's General Chairman, Mrs. Clyde Emery, received a special award from the Dallas Chamber of Commerce, on behalf of the Dallas Committee for Foreign Visitors, for outstanding community service. Recognition and appreciation for Dallas hos- pitality from both groups and individuals in foreign countries, continue to attest to the unique value of this committee. Also, your Council honored the Dallas Com- mittee for Foreign Visitors with a special Proclamation declaring May 10, the date of our Annual Meeting, to be Dallas Committee for Foreign Visitors' Day. Dallas continued to be sought out by national and international agencies as not only a city where distinguished visitors could be taken care of so well but also as a place providing an excellent combination of platform and media exposure under the auspices of the Dallas Council on World Affairs. In fact, one might speculate that the Dallas Council on World Affairs is better known and appreciated nationally and internationally than it is by the Dallas community that it serves. This, of course, does not apply to the dedicated support of the ladies of Les Femmes du Monde Committee, who again established a new record high in its annual sale and to others who supported us and worked with such dedication on behalf of our Council. I wish to express our deep appreciation to Mrs. Allen E. Humphrey, 1971 General Chairman of Les Femmes du Monde Committee, and to the many other charming ladies who made their success possible. Also, I wish to thank the many business organizations and individuals who continue to express their appreciation for our essential community service with their generous con- tributions. As I conclude my two years as President of your Council, I wish to express my appreciation to all of those who have worked so hard to make the Dallas Council on World Affairs the meaningful organization that it is. In addition to those mentioned above, I am grateful to Mrs. H. B. Renfro, President of the Women's Group for this past year, and to the many ladies who assisted her in achieving another fine year for the group; to David Briggs, President of the Young Executives' Group, for his excellent work with this group; and to all of the officers and directors and others who worked without special recognition to assist us. I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as your President and must commend Gen- eral Torrey, our Executive Director, for the fine leadership he gives the Council. Also, his capable staff has my appreciation for their contribution to the effectiveness of the organization. We have a wonderful civic organization. It is my hope that all of you:ach member and supporter-will do your part in making our work better, wn and appreciated in our own community. RUSSELL H.
