I
As you know, Leo Cherne and Dick 5a-l zmann came to see me aft.~r
seeing you last ri ay. rather interesting angle developed during
their report on their recent Berlin trip.
They asked me what I thought should be done to help the group of
June 17 rioters still in our sector of Berlin, since these rioters were
getting pretty desperate and wanted to get out of Berlin to Western
Germany where they could earn a living, which they apparently cannot
do in Berlin.
I told them that I thought it was important that these people shoulc
remain in Berlin rather than get dispersed all over Western GerrLany,
and that they should remain as a group with some kind of group
solidarity, or at least fraternal bonds.
Speaking personally, I didn't think that IRC could afford to give them
support as a group, as this would simply add to IRC's already existing
problem of being accused of political rather than welfare activity.
If IRC was to give any support;, it was to be on an individual relied'
basis.
However, if IRC wanted to enlist private help for these people as A
group, that would be perfectly okay, and I suggested that maybe t.Lis
might be a project in which John L. Lewis and his miners might be
interested. This might be a quick and fairly cheap way for Lewis
in one dramatic jump to catch up with A. F. of L. and CIO in the
international free labor field.
Finally, I told them that they should make no move without advanc-e
consultation with you and if possible a blessing from you.
With the unrest that there is likely to be this coming winter, this cnig)d
be a most interesting group with which you might have some remote
control connections.
