THE ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION
49 WEST 49th STREET, NEW YORK 20
November 14, 1951
Since February of 1949, The Rockefeller
Foundation has been supporting directly or indirectly
the financing of THE CURRENT DIGEST OF THE SOVIET
PRESS, with which I assume you are familiar. The
Social Science Research Council and the American Coun-
cil of Learned Societies, under whose auspices this
venture proceeds, have asked for a grant of $50,000,
payable over the next four years, to help them meet
the deficits which have not yet been obliterated by
subscriptions. It would be of the greatest assistance
to our Trustees in considering this request if we might
have your judgment concerning the value and quality of
the work carried on by-this publication.
I have asked the Director of our Social
Sciences division, Joseph H. Willits, to call on you
to discuss one special feature of the Digest. I hope
very much that when he communicates with you, you will
be willing to see him.
Sincerely yours,
General Walter Bedell Smith
