General Walter B. Smith
2430 E. Street, N. W.
Washington 25, D. C.
Dear Beedle:
ST
I was desperately sorry to miss you when I was in Washington. I received
a call from your office the last day I was in Washington, but somebody in G-3
failed to get the name properly and I could not find out who called me. I had
to leave for California without finding out what the dope was that you had for
me. You were in Key West visiting the President at the time.
' This note is to let
you know that 'I am definitely interested and would like
some way of finding what action on my part would be necessary and what type of
operation i would engage in. I have spent long hours at this job and it is in
good shape despite the failure on the part of General Staff Sections in Washing-
ton to appreciate the importance of the dignity of high ranking positions in
foreign lands. I have always detested rule by personality and emotions.
I found out in Washington that my date of retirement was set for 31 January
1953, which is one year and 28 days from now. This fact, however, does not enter
into my calculations if working for you will offer continued service in the
interest of our country that you and I have served so long. I do not believe that
Joe will yank me out of here especially at this time and also do not believe that
it will be a really fair thing for me to turn in my suit until my present important
international operation is completed, which will be sometime in the late Spring
or in the Summer--I hope.
Not knowing what type of operation I would engage in, I do not know what ST
special qualifications or lack of them that pertain to
resent to ou. I do have very fine contacts in
The above may be superfluous, but I thought I would set it down so that in
case it fit any of your operations, you could weigh it for whatever it was worth.
I do not expect you to write any details, but I certainly wish that I could
in some way get a little dope on the prospects.
Always with the highest admiration and warmest regards, I am
Sincerely.
