There is currently being furnished to your agency by the Foreign Broadcast Information Branch of the Office of Operations, CI G, certain direct wire service for portions of the data included in the Daily Reports published by that Branch. 2. Due to legal requirements over which CIG has no control, the so-called "X" wire service which provides certain interceptions of Ameri- can press dispatches must be diseontirnnied as of 21 June, 1947. 3. A recent survey on the value of the so-called 'A" wire service, which provides portions of interceptions of foreign broadcasts included in the Daily Report published and disseminated by the Pbreign Broadcast Information Branch. Indicates a very wide diversity of opinion on the value of this service. While a majority of the users indicated that the service is usefil, the general tenor of the comments of the users gives an indioa- tion that it is not an essential service. 4, If the "A" wire service is not essential and. its discontinuance would have no vital effect on the timeliness of the intelligence product of the users, it is proposed. to discontinue this service. The fact that all information furnished over this wire is included in it published report which reaches the user in from four to 48 hours after roceipt has been con- sidered in determining the feasibility of this proposal. 6.
