(FOR KEY SEE REVERSE)
1. The canal from Leningrad (N 59-55, E 30,-15) to Lake Onega (N 61-30, E 35=00)
is being dug deeper, and cement sides are being installed in places where
wood has been used. The canal eventually will be able to take vessels up to
4,000 DWT. At present, a fully loaded ship of 2,800 DWT can use the canal
between Leningrad and Petrozavodsk (N 61-49, E 34-30), and can continue
to the White Sea in ballast. When work on the canal is completed, a ship
of this size will be able to proceed from Leningrad to the White Sea with
full load.
2. The Soviet merchant ships URITSKIY and VERESAYEV are regularly used in traffic
between Leningrad and Petrozavodsk.
