1. N. S. Khrushchev bore a grudge against Beriya because the latter had
liquidated certain persons in the Ukraine who were creatures of Khrushchev.
2. fO=us1ichev, on the occasion of the 17 June 1953 East German riots,
saw a chance to strike at his enemy, Beriya. G. M. Malenkov at the time
was not disposed to support Khrushchev's grudge against Beriya, but
Khrushchev persuaded N. S. Kruglov and Marshal G. K. Zhukov to go along
in a plot to eliminate Beriya. Microphones were planted in Beriyafs office,
but Beriya, suspecting foul play, was careful to say nothing incriminating
while at work. The opportunity of the triumvirate came when Beriya
absented himself for a visit to the Ukraine. During this visit the plotters
had Beriyafs strongbox broken open and found there many photographs and
letters bearing on Beriya's relations with certain women of less than
respectable reputation. The key find, however, was a batch of correspondence
between Beriya and Tito.
