NO Construction . 3 SUPPLEMENT TO REPORT p' 2 THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION This report is the result of a joint collection effort by the Air Force, the Navy, the Amy, and CIA and is disseminated in accordance with the provisions of NSCID 7477 u 25 1. Construction Battaliox he Battalion was stationed aZ Zakany k4010N-19.51S) and Muraszemenye (462M-1:637B) along the Yugoslav border, The battalion, with an actual strength of six hundred enlisted men and officers, was charged with the construction of fortifications along the border. The battalion consisted of three construction companies, one headquarters and headquarters c and one service File Item ompanys company ~ee I described at end of repor~. All technicians, who were professional engineers and technician in civilian life, were assigned to headquarters and headquarters company. This company was also in charge of all equipment, including 50 horses and fuel. 2. The service company consisted of cooks, medics, clerks and 50 guards. No arms were carried by the enlisted men; only officers carried pistols and the guard had light machine guns. This was typical of this sort of construction on, where none of the enlisted men had any basic infantry training, nine battalions of this type, with the some strength and equipment, were station at about 35 km intervals along the Yugoslav border. They started construction of fortifications in 1950 and slowly decreased the number of battalions from 1953 In June 1955 3. constructed two sections, one in the Zakany area and one in the Mureszemenye area fee rile Item II described at end of report. There was one central engineer dump in Murakeresztur where construction material was shipped in by rail. From there the material was transported by trucks to the construct- ion areas. Equipped with lathe, grinder and drill press. Every evening each company within the battalion had to request the trucks from the headquarters and headquarters company :.or the next day. 6. Reenforced concrete bunkers for large guns were constructed 1 km apart all along the border between each large bunker, two or three smaller concrete bunkers for machine guns were placed fee File Item IV described at end of report. Forward of these bunkers, at a distance of about 100 m, a trench 1 m wide and 12 m deep was constructed for infantry purposes. In the large bunkers tracks were laid to move the guns into firing position. All bunkers were covered with sod or other natural growths for camouflage purposes. We worked eight hours 3-shifts a day.
