T34/ /85 Tank 2 SUPPLEMENT TO REPORT 1M 25X1 THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION This report is the result of a joint collection effort by the Air Force, the Navy, the Army, and CIA, and is disseminated in accordance with the provisions of NSCID #7. 25X1 25X1 1. 25X1 armored regiment, 25X1 ca at ergoma The mission was to protect the 25X1 tanks against enemy personnel. The unit strength was five officers and about 90 enlisted men. The company was organized into three platoons, each platoon had three squads. Each squad had a squad leader, one light machine gunner, one ammunition carrier, one sharpshooter, and five riflemen. 2. The armored regimen consisted of four tank battalions, each 25X1 tank battalion had about 50 men and 10 T34/85 tanks. 3. In October 1955 the entire regiment participated in a one week maneuver with all Satellite countries Celldomolk 1 11709 25X1 e 25X1 crossing of the Raba river. it 25X1 was a complete success. T34/85 tanks make the river 25X1 crossing. The procedure for preparing cross a river requires special preparation of the tanks. About ten minutes prior to making the crossing, the tank crews apply a yellow wax type paper and grease to all openings in the tank. The main gun and the machine guns are sealed with a cover that fits over the muzzel. The rear deck over the engine is covered with a tarp and the edges are sealed with the paper and grease. The exhausts are not protected or extended with any snorkle type devices. The only snorkle device on the is a 150 cm lona 20 m diameter tube P d from the tank turret. 25X1 25X1 5. When crossing a river the drivers are instructed to drive in second gear with the throttle wide open. They are also instructed not to shift gears while in the water. The tanks travel about 25 km per hour when they enter the water. The gun is always in the forward position. When the tank is in the water the driver can not see. Upon reaching the far side of the river, the drivers hatch is thrown open to allow the driver to see. None of the tanks had any trouble while in the water.
