The dimensions of hatches enable the stowage of large sized cargoes, strong hatch covers are suitable for timber deck loads. The hull is strengthened for navigation in ice. The cargo handling gear consists of eight 5-ton derricks, one 20-ton derrick and eight 5/3-ton steam winches. The ship is propelled by a reciprocating engine connected with an exhaust steam turbine with a total output of 2,300 I.H P. at 105 r.p.m. Steam is supplied by two water tube boilers, built alternatively for coal or oil bunker.
