1. Six fitters from the Veb Abus Kranbau in Eberswelde, East Germany,were employed
in the Soviet Union from the beginning of June 1957 untilthe middle of July
1957 on the assembly of cranes built in the Veb Abus Kranbau. A Soviet engineer,
Nikalay Bobrov, took charge of them during their stay in the USSR, The-cranes
were to be used in the construction of the new Volgo-Baltiyskiy waterway)

2. Two portal, revolving cranes of 10-ton capacity each were assembled at

Cherepovets 3 59-08, E 38-7 50 at the eastern side of the town, north of
L
the road from Shcherbakov N 58-03, E 38-527. One crane of 20-ton capacity
was assembled at Pakhomovka g 53-55, E 40-1g at the eastern side of the
town. Another crane of 20-ton capacity was assembled at Vytegra g 61-00, E 36-2/7
at the eastern side of the town. The fitters also carried out work at Shumkovo
55-350 E 38-527, Novinka 5 60-54, E 36427, and Belousovo 5 57-05, E 38-227,
which are also on the Volgo-Baltiyskiy waterway.2
3 Excavation work was observed at Vologda ill- 59-20, E 39497 and at Shcherbakov
where the River Sheksna flows into the Rybinskoye Vodokhranilishche (Rybinsk
Reservoir). At Pakhomovka and.Vytegra work on the waterway construction waS
observed to be going at full swing.
4, glhe construction Of the waterway is expected to take two years, and therewill
be nine locks on the new system. The present Mariinskiy waterway will continue
to be used during the construction of the new one.
5. At the beginning ofAUgust 1957, three fitters from the Abus Kranbau at Eberswalde
were due- to go to Petrozavodsk 61-49, E 34-227 to. carry out .crane assembly
work for the White Sea canal.
6. At the beginning of June 1957, four fitters were doing assembly work at Komorany
in the Usti Province of Czechoslovakia.

is known more generally as the North-South
waterway system from the Black Sea to the Baltic Sea.
. The name of' the city of Pakhomovka was originally reported as Pachomovsk;
Vytegra was originally reported as Vitegorsk; Shumkovo was originally
reported as Shumkinsk; Novinka was reported as Novinkinsk; and Belousovo
was reported as 13elousovsk.. It is believed that these are the ,cities
referred to in the report.
