Kunmadaras Airfield flew reconnaisance missions from 25 .October to 30 October 1956. They had observed Soviet armored movements across the Soviet-Hungarian border. Soviet armored columns stretched along a roadway about/~okM.;long. Observers believed these columns represented strength equivalent to two armies. These reconnaisance missions were stopped on 30 October because the Soviets insinuated that United Nations aircraft would be flying over Hungary to observe; therefore, all flying activities ceased in order not to hamper UN activities. Hungarian Units Against the Revolution 23. The Mezotur Infantry Regiment was commanded by a Hungarian ma,~or who was trained in the USSR. He stated openly right from the start that he was not in favor of the revolution, and that he would side with the Soviets. He did not allow env contact between his regiment and the revolutionaries.
