NAVAL WARSHIPS SIGHTED OFF NORTH RUSSIA a two?funnelled destroyer passed about mile away to the 25X1 westward, The course of the destroyer was approximately S.W. and was heading into the WHITE SEA. 2 (a) four vessels were sighted on the starboard side on a crossing course of about 24.30. Conditions at the time were dull and it was impossible to obtain any detail, (b) The ships consisted of: (i) A parent ship which at first glance appeared to be a one?funnelled passenger ship of about 12,000 tons, She had a flush deck from stem to the bridge with one turret just forward of the bridge, The after decks wore terraced towards the stern and there were two turrets aft, one above the other. There was one mast forward and a short mast aft. (See photograph No.1), (ii) Two escort vessels of the Artillerist class, identified principally by their squat single funnel placed clear of the bridge structure, (See photograph No.2), (iii) A submarine, which was not noticed until it started using a signal lamp to the parent ship, This submarine was astern of the parent ship, appeared to be very low in the water with practically no hull shoving, There wore two objects protruding at an angle from the after end of the conning tower (see attached sketch), Two vessels near KOLA INLET in line ahead. Course at first appeared to be to the northward and then to the north westward tQ alsi'tion off NOR7 CAPE.
