1. Soviet Naval Vessel: A Soviet destroyer was observed eight to
ten miles off Odessa on an easterly course at 25-30 knots.
2. Merchant Vessels: A 20,000 ton vessel with "paddle boxes" was
moored at the Grain Wharf just inside the entrance to the
Quarantine Harbor. This ship had one stack and two masts.
this ship was powered
by two engines and was capable of 17 knots.
Two dry cargo vessels, of approximately 15,000 tons each, which
had been damaged by the Germans during World War II, were being
repaired in the Quarantine Harbor.
Twenty large loaded barges and a tugboat were moored at anchor
one mile off the Petroleum Harbor.
3. Port Facilities: A large floating crane was moored in the
Quarantine Harbor.
14. October Revolution Anniversary: On 7 November the larger buildings
in Odessa were decorated with Soviet flags. The doors and
windows of public buildings were festooned with light bulbs and
pictures of Lenin were very much in evidence. There were no
pictures of Stalin in sight.
Economic Conditions: There were long lines of people in Odessa
waiting to buy groceries. Shorter lines were formed at clothing
stores,

Soviet Naval Vessels: A naval vessel on station off the entranc

to Odessa Harbor communicated by blinker light with a signal
station in the harbor.

mast forward and a shorter one aft. The raised forecastle extended
slightly abaft the bridge. Six ,guns of approximately 15 cm. bore
were carried in two turrets with twin mounts forward and one turret
aft. Anti-aircraft armament was carried amidships and aft. Radar
of various types was mounted on the main mast. The hull was painted
a dark blue.
4. Merchant Vessels: A small Bulgarian motor vessel unloaded Bulgarian
tomato juice in the Quarantine Harbor and loaded iron pipes of
20-25 cm. diameter. Ithe
pipe was destined for Varna.
5. Construction and Repair Activity: A tanker and three dry cargo vessels
were being repaired alongside the mole forming the north-eastern
entrance to the Quarantine Harbor.
6. Industrial Products for Export: Large quantities of steel construction

pipes of various sizes were stored in the port. This material covered a
space 20 to 30 meters in width extending from the seaward end of the
mole forming the eastern side of Quarantine Harbor around to the New Harbor.
