Metallurgical Works, at Miskolc. The report gives information on number
of employees, production and raw materials and on the activities of the
following departments: the large smelting workshops and furnace, the
carpenters' workshop and sample storage, the Siemens-Martin steel works,
the electro-steel plant, the fine rolling mill and large forge, the foundry
and the stretching workshop. The report also includes a sketch showing
the layout of the works and the location of. the various sections. The
sketch is keyed to an accompanying legend.

The total nur^ber of workers is a_~proxirnately 5,;00, of whom 2aja work
in the admi,aistration buildings. he breakdown of the workers in the
varyoas mills, furnaces and workshops etc. is shown at ~p ~endix "G" of
this report.
2. P: LODUCTION
Production can be divided under the following headings:
(a) L RGE S3, LLrl'I_i G ,;'GF i3I'OP U ` .-~ 1 U NICE.
(i) The workers Z ;cork in three shifts,
(ii) The production consists of the raw ,rx terial smelted from iron ore,
(iii) 90j6 of the ore is supplied by the Soviet Union. It is of
extremely poor quality since it contains a large percentage of
clinker.
(iv) The 10 which is the product of the Hungarian mines is 4.0,, better
ore. A very high price has to be paid in Hard Currency for the
Russian ore, so mach so that for instance the cost of producing,
the raw material is considerably less than the cost of the ore itself.
(v) (,oke for the power station is :L-sported from Czechoslovakia, Poland
and the
(vi) The monthly production is between 15,000 and 20,000 tons of crude 'iron.

It is here that the mules and forms for the Foundry are
prepared, as well as for the various factories producing war

owing to the extreme shortage of scrap iron in the country.

The fine steels produced by this plant are almost without exception
u,3ed by the 30-1:.0 factories producing war material which exist in
the country,
(ii) The various chemicals w -ich arc needed t3 produce these steel,
i.e. h o = molibium, vanadium (?) and CO = 0obalr, , are not
available in Hungar.f, and have to be imported.
(iii) The fine steels produced are of the f ollo,r .i quality
