POLISH INSTALLATIONS 1. Two Army Installations in WROCAW a. Silesian Military District and II Armored Corps Headquarters Compound (1) Location The headquarters compound was located in the downtown section of the city, approximately 500 a west of the Plac Powstazcc6w A4skich in WROCLAW (see Annex A for pinpoint location and layout). This compound was bounded on the south side by Ulica Satabowa, on the west side by Ulioa Pruchniaka, and on the north- northwest side by Ulica Bernarda Pretficza. (2) Installation (For sketch of this installation, see Annex A.) 25X1 There was no sharp division between the offices of the two headquarters, the Silesian Military District and the II Armored Corps .1? The commanding generals had their separate offices on the third floor of Wing la, adjacent to each other, and the staff offices of both headquarters were either occupied by the same offices together or were situated in the same sections of the buildings. This compound consisted of three sections. The main section included the headquarters building, EM billets and officers' club, moving picture theater, and transient officers' quarters. (See items la, lb, lc, 2, 3 and 3a, 9 and 10 of Annex A.) The second section was composed of the guardhouse and pass office (see item 4 of Annex A). The third section included the motor pool area and the finance office. (See items 5, 6, 7 and 8 of Annex A.) (3) Administration the (hartermanter branch or an officer from that branch was responsible for the housekeeping details of this compound . (4) Equipment and Transportation this headquarters used radios since antennas unknown number of trucks, motorcycles, and sedans (g) Security The main section of this compound was partly, but not completely, enclosed by the wall or the hedge which grew in places. The headquarters building was bordered by streets on three sides. during duty hours all 25X1 entrances were guarded by an EM wearing a,.-.eap with a red band and armed with a pistol. During the night all entrances were locked and the first floor was illuminated and patrolled by * guard inside the building. During hours of darkness, the outside grounds of the headquarters building were patrolled by one sentry who was armed with a submachine gun. The guardhouse and pass office were open 24 hours a day and housed the officer of the guard and the guard detail, strength unknown. The entrance to the guardhouse was illuminated at night. The motor park was enclosed by a mash wire fence. The gate and the pedestrian entrance were open in the day time and guarded by two EM, both armed with SMdis. At night the entrances were locked and guarded by a sentry usually located in a nearby guard shed. The garages and vehicles parked in the open were guarded at night by one walking sentry. l To enter the headquarters building, a separate phss was required for the offices of the commanding generals of the Military District and the II Armored Corps and offices of the tactical and operations staff sections of both headquarters. These passes were issued by the duty officer an duty at the guard- house and pass office or his representative." Upon presentation of the appointment slip or official orders calling the officer to the headquarters, the duty officer checked it by phone with the office to be contacted and then issued the pass. A different type of pass was issued by the same office to visitors of the ground forces and technical staff section offices. This pass could be obtained by pre- sentation of orders and/or by giving the name, grade, and office number of the individual to be visited. this type of pass was easy to obtain, especially if one knew some officer by name who worked in an office. b. Motor Transport Compound (1) Location This installation was situated in the Rakewiec district of WROCZAW, approximately 600 m southwest of the Odra River. (2) Installation (For sketch and a detailed description of this installation, see Annex B.) (3) Equipment the transportation unit was equipped with an unknown number of unidentified _ZIS-type trucks of WW II vintage, GAZ-69 trucks called "Gazik", Polish-made Star-type trucks, and a few Lublin-type trucks. saw two or three Dodge li-ton trucks entering or leaving this installation. (4) Security This compound was surrounded by a mesh wire fence and had one entrance through the archway of the headquarters building (item 1, Annex B). One room of the main building, situated to the side of the underpass, was used as a guard room and pass office. The entrance was guarded by one sentry wearing a helmet and armed with a SM. This guard checked the vehicles and the military identification books of uniformed Personnel wishing to visit the military store at this installation. 2. wee AIM Installations in ZAGAN E15-19) (WT 220185) a. 11th Armored Div Headquarters Building (1) Location This headquarters building was situated in the pert east part of iAGAH, approximately 300 m west of the Bobr River highway bridge at AGAR, north of Mica Zarska, and east of an unnamed, dead-end street (see Annex C for pinpoint location). The only entrance was on the west side of the build- 25X1 ing about 25 m north of Ulica Zarska. Three or four steps led directly from the street to the vestibule which was! guerde&by one sentry who were a cap with a black band and was armed with a SMG' To the left of the vestibule there was a room which served as a pass office and a guard room. During the hours of darkness the first floor of this building was illuminated and the outside of the building was guarded by a walking sentry armed with a SM. b. Casern Used by 11th Armored Div Units (1) Location (e'er plnpoint location of this inst 1 llatien, see Annex D.) 25X1 It was located northwest of 2ALAN, north of the highway from ALAN to ARY (N51-38, E15-0)(WT 100210) and approximately 400 a west of the railroad line from fJGAN to BIMIow (N51-439 115-11). ?(2) Installation This casern (located in former German territory) was built by the Germans at an unknown date prior to WW II and was used to house the Herman Goering MSS" Panzer Div. During the war this installation was damaged slightly but was repaired by the Poles ding The period 1946 to 1949. The barracks building; 14 in all, fronted on the ALAN- ARY highway, adjoined to the rear and north by the headquarters_.sad_regimantal was buildings, totaling seven buildings. with the exception o2' the infantry troops of the motorized infantry battalion of the 8th Ned Tk Regt and of the 15th Mess Regt, who slept in double-decked beds, there was sufficient space to house all troops described in Annex D in single beds. The training areal, ideal for armor problems were located adjacent to the casern on the west, toward ZARY, on both sides of the 1AGAN-GARY highway. There was no equipment parked or stored in the casern open areas. The Division Equipment Repair Shop, which was in two large build- ings, was capable of replacing and overhauling vehicle engines and of performing "higher" echelon maintenance on 11th Armored Div equipment. _ I armor repairs which could not be handled by this shop were done by the Tank Repair Shop in SIEMIANOWI Z (N50-18, 319-02). (5) Security The casern was enclosed by a two-meter-high mesh wire fence, topped with three barbed wire;'strands mounted on cement pests, with the top part inclined toward installation. The over-all security for the installation was the responsibility of the Zagan garrison guard, which was quartered and had its head- quarters at this casern. The garrison commander was the unidentified CO of the 22d Independent Tk Rogt or the CO of the 15th Mecz R Mt The detail for this duty, estimated at from 45 to 60 men, was supplied by the regiments stationed in the casern, rotating according to roster. The garrison guard manned the main entrance to the casern and provided walking posts along the casern fences. This guard also patrolled the city of ZAGAN and guarded the casern prison, also located in the casern,. In addition, individual regiments and battalions had their own guards around mess halls and motor parks. The main entrance to the casern, which was open 24 hours a day, was manned by two sentries who wore caps with black bands and were armed with SMGs. The entrance to the casern, the mess hall and headquarters buildings, the motor parks, and the maintenance shop were illuminated at night. c. Motor Transport Command CONFiDCI.Tit'i L . (1) Location This c.Pound was located about 500 m south of the town square, on the west side of the ZAGAN-LAWSZOWA highway (see Annex F for pinpoint location if this installation). (4) Equipment unidentified WW II Soviet ZIS-type and newer Polish Lublin-and Star-type trucks entering. or leaving the compound. (5) Security This compound was enclosed by a two-meter-high mesh wire fence and had one vehicle entrance, which was guarded by a transportation sentry, armed with a S) 3, and one pedestrian entrance to the main building, also guarded by a sentry. At night, the main gate, and the warehouse and garage area were illumin- ated. 3. 34th Labor Bn Casern in STRZELCE OPOLSKIE (N51-06 E19-47)(CA 087991) a. Location (For pinpoint location of this casern, ass Annex G.) This casern was situated in the northwestern outskirts of STRZELCE OPOISKIE, approximately 1,000 m northwest of the town square and southwest of the OPOLR-STR?.BLCE OPOLSKIZ highway, at coordinates CA 076998. This installation consisted of a total of six buildings and two addi- tional buildings under construction. At least three of the buildings were not fully utilized since only the headquarters of the 34th Labor Bn, comprising approximately 100 officers and fli, was located hero I 25X1 there was a team consisting of an unknown number of tank officers visiting this installation the talk among the officers indicated that 25X1 U t this installation was to be occupied by an unidentified tank unit. the 34th Labor Bn still occupied this case rn the 00 of the 34th Labor Bn was also responsible 25X1 for the administration of this casern through his quartermaster officer, Mai sum J.' (fnu) . d. Equipment The 34th Labor Bn had en unknown number of ZIS, Star, and Lublin type trucks. In addition, there were a few heroes which were used to haul supplies from the surrounding farms and from the railroad station at STRZELCE OPOLSKIE. Security -9- This casern was enclosed by a two-meter-high mesh wire fence mounted on cement poles and topped with three or four strands of barbed wire. The entrance was guarded by two sent?ies, each armed with old-type submachine gun or carbine. In addition, at night there was a two-man patrol walking around inside the fence. The gasoline pump, sees hall, and the garages, each were guarded by one sentry during night hours. Unidentified Hospital and Unidentified Infantry Battalion Casern in WROCLAW (For d. Equipment This casern was situated in the Karlowice.district of WROCLAW, north of Ulica Ignacego Cbrzanowskiego and east of Ulica Czajkowekiego. (For sketch and a detailed description of this instal- lation, see Annex This compound consisted of 10 red brick buildings and two wooden bar- racks. The headquarters and the hospital were in two of the buildings, and the rest of the buildings were occupied by troops wearing magenta shoulderboards, called infantry troops .1 'estimated the strength at one battalion. This structure was in the form of a figure six (6) and housed the offices in its three wings (la, lb, lc) as follows: Wing is, approximately 50 m x 12 m in size. The first and second floors were occupied by the Training (Tactics) and Operations Staff Section of the Silesian Military District and II Armored Corps Headquarters. Third Floor - Commanding Generals, the Dpputy OG for Political Matters, Military District Party Commission (Okr?gowa Komisja Partyjna) and Political Branch of Special Units, such as: labor battalions and others Fourth Floor- Political Branch Supply (books, training aids, films), code rooms, and radio roams; antennas were mounted on top of the building. Wing ib, approximately 30 a x 12 m in size- Offices of Rear Services, Oaartermaster, Medical Service Wing lc, approximately 30 m x 15 a x 12 a in size - Offices of chiefs of ground forces and technical staff sections (Signal, Engineer, Trans- portation, etc.) 2. Three-stories-high, red brick building with a peaked roof dovered'with red tile and approximately 20 a x 12 a in size. This building housed the EM of the detachment serng this headquarters. 3. Three-stories-high, gray stucco building with a peaked roof covered with red tile, approximately 60 a x 15 a in size. The first floor of this building housed the officers, club, dining room, dance and movie hall, and library, while the second and third floors were used as officers' transient billets. 3a. One-story-high, red brick structure approximately 15 a x 12 a in size which was an extension of the movie and dance hall mentioned in item 3, above. 4. One-story-,high, red brick building approximately 10 m x 4 m in size. This building doused the guard detail with the officer in charge, the pass office, and the telephone exchange with approximately 15 telephone booths for local city calls. 5.
