~1. Magadan (N 59-3~4, E 150-48), Magadanakaya Oblast, was !'ounded
?in .1931 or 1932. In 1952 it had a population~oP aboat
90,000, which included prisoners. Magadan was the only
populated point in the Daistroy territory in which free
settlers made up a majority o! th? population. In all
other populated points, prisoners mad? up the majority of
the population. Most oP the structures in the oity were
side-story wooden homes. There were a Psw two-otory
wo~ en buildings. Three-story stone dwellings were boated
only en the main street. The streets in the center of the

city were unpaved. gidewalks were wood. .There was street
lighting at night but only in the oenter o! the oity.

2. Food, fuel, machine, and other depots were located in Magadan.
All Dalatroy populated points were supplied throu~.+:~~ Magad~ln~, .
Also looated in Magadan was a glees plant, electric bulb plant,
brick plant, and a sewing workshop.
3. There was one drama theater, in which prisoners performed for
the moat part. A moving pcture?theater, a hotel, a restaurant,
a radio receiving station (radiouzel), two ten-year Sohoola,
and a geological mining tekhnikum were also located in Magadan.
Another moving picture theater was located in the building of
the-Chief Directorate of Dalstroy. Moving picture performaa~o~es here
were not shown regularly and were only given for workers of
the Chief Direotorate of Dalatroy; sometimes perforsnnoea here
given for other workers of Dalatroy who came to Magadan, suoh

The building of the personnel asotion of the Ghief
Direotorate of Dalatroy. This was a U-rthapsd, two-story
oorrugated (rublenyy) wooden building, with a wooden root'.
2. The Chief Direotorate of Dalatroy. This was a five-story
U-shaped atone building with a sheet-iron roof. A statue.
of Lenin stood in-front of the building. A restaurant l~or
workers of the Chief Direotorate ~aa looated in the builds
ing.
3. Sever restaurant. This was a single-story Mooden house.
This restaurant was usually frequented by hooligans who
gathered there to get drunk and frequently to start Fights.
City people did not go there.
4. Theater. This was a two-story wooden building.
5. Central heating station. This building was enolosed by a
barbed-wire fenoe. Several iron pipet running frow the
building were visible.
