Prior to this curtailment of service, which became effective sometime in 1956, there was no fixed length of service, or rather no compliance with the policy on length of service by the Ministry of National Defense, and con- sequently conscripts and reservists called for training never knew when they would be released to civilian status. There was no relaxation in the requirements for deferment of conscripts from compulsory active duty although the reduction of Polish armed forces was stressed in the newspapers and on the Polish radio. 3. 4.
