This casern was occupied jointly by this unidentified unit and the Central School for Rear Services. Actual strength of this unit was about 20 officers, 22 NCOs and 350 EM; their training was continuous throughout the year. about 100 of the EM from this infantry unit took six months of infantry training at this casern and then six months of unidentified medical training at an unidentified military hos- pital in KRAKOW. Upon completion of this training they were transferred to medical units and hospitals throughout Poland. about 20 EK of this unit were on detached duty with the KRAKOlirmilitary police and performed military police duties as directed by the CO of an unidentified military police unit. This unit was located on the west side of Ulica Marymonska in the RiAlanv nistviet in WARSAW. three or four one-story buildings used for barracks. about 25 un- identified antiaircraft guns placed in dug-in positions and about 25 Russian ZIS trucks which were mounted on wooden blocks, this unidentified unit would remain in the area for about three months and then the area would be vacant for three to four weeks following which the area would be re-occupied. On several occasions observed unidentified antiaircraft units engaged in firing practice at unidentified targets towed by light aircraft. about five single-engine, Russian-type aircraft on an airfield loco:tad in this area. this type plane was referred to as "Kukuruznikui The runway of this airfield was about 400 m long, parallel to Ulica Marymonska. An obstacle course was located in this area between Ulica Marymonska and the air- field; a wooden wall-about 2m high and a barbed wire entanglement. Training Area Unk KRAKOW (See Annex A for pinpoint loca- tion) CO was unknown. a number of army units in the KRAKOW area and university stu- dents taking military training used this training area. A rifle range with 10 lanes for small arms was located in this training area. Headquarters, Unk Transportation Ser- vice of the Ministry of National Defense WARSAW (See Annex G for pinpoint location) CO was unknown. This instal- lation was located next to the First Military District Hosnital a sign on the building read "Headquarters, Transportation Service, Ministry of National Defense" Sluiby Sawochodowij - M.O.N.). It was a four-story red brick building and many officers entering and leaving. Central School for Rear Services KRAKOW (See Rear Services Department of the Annex A for Ministry of Nation- pinpoint loc- al Defense ation CO was unknown. the Reserve Train- ing Center in KRAKOW, was subordinate to the Central School for Rear Services. This school was located in the Rajska Casern, which was occupied jointly by the school and an unidentified infantry unit. This unit was located directly across the street from the Reserve Training Center at the Montelupich nnAcern First Military Unk District Hospital WARSAW (See Annex G for pinpoint location) CO was Colonel HANEMAN, (fnu), Medical branch. From 7 May to 30 June 1956 furnished medical treatment to all military personnel of the First Military District.2 Because this hospital had the best military eye clinic in Poland it also handled serious eye injuries for all Polish troops, and in November 1956 the regime directed that 30 percent of the eye clinic be utilized for treatment of civilian patients referred to this hospital by civilian institutions, this hospital had a 600-bed capacity; estimated strength of assigned personnel (which included doctors, nurses, EM and civilians) at approxi- mately 307. Within the compound of this hospital, but not subordinate to it, was a Central Military Health Clinic (Osrodek Zdrowia Poradnia Wojskowa). The actual strength of this clinic, including medical officers, dentists (military and civilian), technicians, and clerks was approximately 127. Four military ambulances, three un- identified trucks, and three personnel carriers were assigned to this hospital. Two ambulances were of Soviet make, one of Czech make, and one of American make. The personnel carriers consisted of two Polish "Warszawa" vehicles and one CzechnSkodan. the First Military District Hospital, as late as 1956, furnished doctors, nurses, EM,and medical supplies to a field hospital located in North Korea which was under the direction of this hospital. Although this sign was posted on the buildings, other types of medical treatment were also given _ there. U/1 Dispensary link WARSAW (See Annex I for pinpoint location.) CO was unknown. This die- pensary was located at the corner of Ulica Koszykowa and Mica Chalubinskie2o in WARSAW Ittwas housed in a two-story building constructed of red brick. It was common knowledge that officers working in The Ministry of Nation- al Defense received medical treatment here. The following sign was posted on the front of the building: "Dispensary of The Ministry of National Defense" ("Przv- chodnie Ministerstwa Obrany Narodowej"). This was the army central pharmaceu- tical depot for all Poland. The warehouses were in the woods and paths led to the buildings. Military Post Ur* WARSAW (See cg was unknown. This Office Annex G for building was located in pinpoint the same city block as the location.) First Military District Hospital This was all-story building about 100 in long, 50 in wide and 50 in hi h. The front of the building was constructed of steel frames with elate ?lass. this building was about six years old. U/i Military Unk Prison KRAKOW (See Annex LI for pinpoint location.) This prison was located adjacent to the Montelupich Casern and was used for confinement of personnel in the Krakow area for periods of not over 30 days. (For a sketch of this unidentified military prison see item 24, Annex E.) The cells along Hontelupich Ulice were used for prisoners who received light sentences, and the rear cells were used for prisoners sentenced to hard labor. (For a sketch of this area, see AnnPexAct R Anti T ) The mission of this unit was to conduct basic reserve military training for certain groups of individuals who were deferred from the service at an earlier date and classified as reservists in the Rear Services. Following this training, these reservists were reassigned to various unidentified units of the Rear Services throughout Poland for the remainder of their three month& reserve training. There were 115 enlisted reservists and five reserve officers in the training group The majority of these persons were between the ages of 30 and 35. The duration of training was about four weeks. A passageway through the con- ter of the building about 5 meters high and 7 meters wide permitted vehicles to enter the area. The entire third floor was used for classrooms. This casern was shared by a Rear Services cooks' school, fire-fighting school, and an unidenti- fied infantry unit. Windows on the first floor had iron bars across them. 1. Mess hall and kitchen. 2. Storage room for kitchen. 3. Washroom and latrine. 4. Guard check point and quarters. 5. Storage of rations for the Rajska and Montelupich Caserns. 6. Issue point for rations. 7. Unidentified offices. 8. Training and drill field about 115 in long and 60 in wide. 9. Iron pipe about 1 meter high, perhaps used as a hitching post for horses in former times. 10. Wire mesh fence about two meters high. 11. Open area adjoining the casern about 50 in wide and 100 in long. 12. Career NCO family quarters. These buildings were one-story, about 50 in long, 8 in wide, 8 in high, constructed of cement painted white with black tar-paper gable roofs. about 4 families lived in each house. NCOs could enter the casern from these houses. 13. Passageway through the building about 7 m wide and 5 m high. This passageway was used for vehicles as well as for personnel. 14. Main door. This was a large, dark yellow, wooden door which allowed vehicles to enter and leave the area. There was also a small door within the large door to allow personnel to enter or leave the area. Two guards with submachineguns were on duty at this gate 24 hours a day. 15. Back door, which was similar in construction to the main door. There were no guards at this door. 16. Side gate. This was an open driveway about 10 in wide with a crushed rock base, used to allow larger trucks to enter the area and pick up rations from the ration issue point. Guards were posted here 24 hours a day. Four class rooms, each having a capacity of about 50 people. 2. Quarters for personnel attending the fire-fighting or cooks' school at Rajska Casern. It was used only when sufficient space was not available at the Rajska Casern. The four class rooms (1) and the quarters ( 2) were located on the ground floor of a two-story building about 100 in long, 12 in wide, 8 in high, construct- ed of brick, painted white, with a black tar-paperaable roof. Windows on the street side were blue in color. On the second floor of the building was a large workshop for the construction and repair of targets used on the firing range and a workshop for repairs at Montelupich Casern. 3. A concrete wall about four meters high, painted white. 4. Mess hall for EM. This was a one-story building, 15 in long, 6 in wide, and 5 in high, constructed of unpainted wood with a black tar-paper gable roof. 5. Xitchen,8 m x 6 in at 3i m, same construction as above. 6. Storage room for kitchen, 10mx6mx5 In, same construction as above. 7. Dayroom and recreation hall, 25mx6mx5 m9 same construction as above. 8. Main gate, constructed of unpainted wood, about 2 in high. This gate was guarded 24 hours a day by guards armed with pistols. 9. Guard building, a one-story building, 5 in long, 5 in wide, and 5 in high, con- structed of brick painted white, with a black tar-paper shed-type roof. 10. Office of the commander. This was a one-story building 6 in long, 5 in wide, and 5 in high, constructed of brick painted white, with a black tar-paper, shed-type roof. 11. Wall, two meters high, made of cement blocks. 12. Unidentified military prison. These were three-story buildings, about 25 in long, 12 in wide, and 15 in high, constructed of cement blocks painted black with a black tar-paper gable roof. The windows along Montelupich Ulice had iron bars across them. 13. Side gate, constructed of iron, about l meters high. 14. Walk leading from the side gate to the unidentified AAA unit and studentst barracks. 15. Training area for the unidentified AAA unit. 16. Personnel office and orderly roan. This was a one-story building 10 in long, 5 in wide, and 5 in high, constructed of prick painted white with a black tar- paper shed-type roof. Side gate. This was an opening in the fence about 5 meters wide; it was unguarded. This gate was used by the unidentified AAA unit to move their vehicles and antiaircraft guns into their training area. 18. Unidentified AAA unit barracks and offices. This was a four-story building 100 in long, 12 m wide, and 25 in high, constructed of brick painted yellow with a black metal gable roof. Half of this building was occupied by unidentified students from the trades school (Polytechnicke) at KRAKOW. 19. Grass area. 20. A wire mesh fence about l m high. 21. Side gate, constructed of iron, about l meters high. 22. Back gate, constructed of unpainted wood, about 6 meters wide and 5 meters high. Both vehicles and personnel were permitted to use this gate. The gate was locked at all times and the NCO in charge of the workshop (Building 29) had possession of the key, 23. A small three-sided shed. A person desiring entrance through Gate 22 (the back gate), would press a button in this shed. This would ring a bell in the repair shop (Building 29) where the NCO in charge had possession of the key for the gate. 24. Unpainted wooden fence about two meters high. 25. Trees, 26. Fire-fighting equipment storage shed. This was a one-story building partly built into the ground, 20 in long, 8 in vides, and 5 in high, constructed of con- crete painted white with a black tar-paper gable roof. 27. Water basin constructed of concrete 10 in long, 10 in wide, and 2 in deep. This water was used only in case of fire. 28. POL building. This was a one-story building 15 in long, 8 in wide, and 6 in high, constructed of concrete painted white with a black tar-paper gable roof. The type and quantity of POL products stored here were unknown. 29. Workshop for minor repairs on weapons and equipment. This was a one-story building 15 m long, 8 in wide, and 6 in high, constructed of brick painted white with a black tar-paper gable roof. 30. Garage for vehicles and weapons of the unidentified AAA unit. This was a one- story building, 50 in long, 10 in wide, and 6 in high, constructed of wood painted yellow with a black tar-paper gable roof. This building had four vehicle entrances opening into the compound. 31. Quarters for personnel undergoing basic training. This was a one-story building 40 in long, 15 in wide on the east wing, 25 in wide on the west wing, and 7 in high, constructed of brick painted white, with a black tar-paper gable roof. It had an estimated capacity of 150 persons. (See Annex 31,) 32. Open area between buildings used for training. This was a one-story building, 80 in long, 12 in wide, and 8 in high, constructed of unpaint- ed wood with a black tar-paper gable roof. It was constructed on a cement base about 4 in high, and on the east side of the building there was a cement ramp with tracks similar to railroad tracks leading into the building. these tracks extended into the building, and that the were used for some unidentified heavy equipment or vehicle. On one occasion observed unidentified antiaircraft weapons and unidenti- fied aircraft searchlights Guards from an uilidentiiied unit guarded this building day and night; two guards were posted during the day and four guards were posted at night. These guards were armed with unidentified rifles and carried them at trail arms while on duty. 34. Vehicle roadway. 35. Shower building, outside the compound. There were no shower facilities with- in the compound. This was a two-story building about 40 in long, 12 m wide, and 8 in high, constructed of brick painted white with a black tar-paper gable roof.
