The yard had about 15 tracks; their len?th was about 600 meters. The'width of the yard was about 100 meters. Shift- ing of cars was accomplished by means of ani locomotives while track switching equipment was operated manually. Signalling ecuipment was operated mechanically and electrically. One locomotive shed with twostal1s" was located to the yard with facilities for simultaneous minor repairs on two steam locomotives. Major locomotive repairs were conducted in Sofia. Also in the yard was a coal pit with a opacity of approximately 200 tons; coaling was accomplished by means of a crane. The capacity of the yard's water tank was about 100 cubic meters; water was supplied by the city water system. Traffic Through passenger train traffic daily amounted to five trains in the direction of Varna and five in the direction of Sofia. Three passenger trains arrived and left daily to and from Polyanovgrad. Through freight trainFtraffic daily amounted to at least 10 trains in the Sofia direction, and approximately the same number in the direction of Varna. About five freight trains arrived and left daily from and to Polyanovgrad. at least every 30 minutes a train entered or left the station. More cargo was carried in the direction of Varna than to' Sofia. According to the regulations, empty freight cars were not allowed to leave Sofia. Freight carried in the Varna direction consisted of lumber, iron bars, coal and various cargo and equipment destined for export through Varna. Freight carried from Varna consisted mainly of imported goods, machinery and equipment. Site Layout Attached is a sketch of the Kolarovgrad railroad station and yard. It housed a telephone exchanges dispatch office, several apartments, a restaurant and.waiting rooms. There.was an air raid shelter in the base- went. (2) Post Office - a-three-story, concrete building measur- ing about 30 x 15 x 10 meters with a tile, gable roof. A first aid station was also located in this building. >.. 1).. _, Railroad Maintenance Section - a three-story, concrete building about 30 _- 15 x 10 meters with a tiles gable roof. The 9th Railroad Maintenance Section was located in this building. (4) Railroad Maintenance Shops - four O.:" five brick build- ings which housed blacksmith, carpenters locksmith, paint, and plumber shope.and a supply section. (5) Housing Area three three-story brick buildings with tiles gable roofs, each measuring approximately 20 x 10 x 10 meters. Railroad personnel and their families resided here. (6) Housing Area - three one-story brick buildings with tile, gable roof..., each measuring approximately 7 x 5 x 5 meters. Railroad personnel and their families resided here. (7). Housing Area two brick building, one two stories highs the other three, each measuring approximately 30 x 15 meters. Railroad personnel and their families resided here. Housing Area four or five b:,:'.ck.buildings of various sizes where railroad maintenance personnel and their families were living. A small maintenance supply shop was located in one of the buildings. The Kolarovgrad railroad station was formerly located in this area' in building 8a. (9) Former Telephone Exchange - used as a garage for a motor trolley. (10) Switchman's Offices - brick buildings measuring 3 x 3 x 3 meters. The buildings were connected by phone with the railroad station. (11) Farm Products Storehouse --a brick building measuring about 40 x 20 x 20 meters with a tiler gable roof. Slaughter House - occupied several buildings. City Bus Garage and Repair Shope - occupying an area of approximately one square kilometer. (15) POL Storage Area - surrounded by a barbed wire fence approximately three meters high. The two or three storage tanks were seven or eight meters long and two or three meters in diameter. There was also a lazge number of 200 liter barrels. (16) Sunflower Oil Refinery - five or six buildings surrounded by a barbed wire fence. (16a) Housing Area and Restaurant. (17) District Veterinary Clinic - one two-story and one one-story brick building. (18) Pen - for livestock. (19) Armenian and Jewish Cemetery. (20) Railroad Emergency Command Post - constructed in 1954. plans for the above command poet. It was a re n orced concrete construction approximately five meters underground, and measuring approximately 8 x 5 x 2.8 meters. The command post, to be utilized in case of an air attack, could accommodate two or three persons for 48 hours. It was equipped with a telephone, radio station, electric power generator, ventilation system, and with water supply and emergency food rations. It was designed according to Soviet specifications by the Transportation Iinistry in Sofia. (21) Seedbeds - belonging to the railroad maintenance section. (22) City Mill "Saglasiye" - a brick building measuring approximately 60 x 50 x 25 meters. (23) Small Gauge Railroad - 40 to 50 centimeters wide, connecting the mill with the railroad track. (28) Grain storehouse - two brick buildings, each measuring about 20 x 20 x 8 meters with a gable, tile roof. (28a) Mesa Hall - a brick building measuring about 30 x 20 x 8 meters vita a gable, tile roof. (28b) Recreation Building - a brick construction measuring about 20 x 20 x 8 meters with a gable, tile roof. (29) Locomotive Shed - with two stalls. A brick building measuring approximately 50 x 7 x 3 meters. Locomotive maintenance and minor repairs were performed here. (29a) Shope - a brick building measuring approximately 50 x 7 x 3 meters. t housed a welding shop, carpenter shop and locksmith shop. (30) Water Tower - a reinforced concrete construction measuring 6 x 6 meters and approximately 20 meters high. The capacity of the water tank was 100 cubic meters. The water was supplied by the city water system. Approximately 1,000 cubic meters of water could be supplied by the ??ity water system during a 24 hour period. (31) Water Pumps - pipe diameter was approximately 200 mi]lmetera. It took about three to five minutes to fill a locomotive with water. (31a) Ash pits - concrete, approximately 30 meters long. (32) Coal Storage - a concrete pit with a capacity of approximately tone. A small electrically operated crane vita a capacity of approximately 100 kilograms was used for coaling locomotives. (32a) Coal Storage - approximately 1,000 tons of coal to be used only in emergency situations. It supplied electric power to Kolarovgrad and vicinity. Coal or oil could be used to operate the plant. (33a) Water Tower r constructed of wood, utilized to cool the water. (33b) Oil Pumps - connecting the power plant with the rail- road yard. Oil for the power plant was pumped through a pipe located underground. (34) Freight Station - two brick buildings, each with a tile, gable roof. One housed the freight office and measured 8 x 7 x 5 meters and the other a warehouse measuring about 15 x 6 x 4 meters. (34a) Loading Platform - constructed of stone, approximately 80 metc-rs long. (35) Loading Platform - constructed of stone, approximately 200 meters long. (36) New Freight Station - a two-story, brick building with a gable, tile roof and measuring about 15 x 10 x 8 meters. Adjacent to it was a brick building measuring 20 x 10 x 7 meters where a warehouse was located. (37) Loading Platform - constructed of stone, approximately 200 meters long. (38) Bokludzha River - approximately one meter wide, a tributary of Kamchiya River. (39) Barbed Wire Fence -, approximately 2.2 meters high which partially surrounded the railroad yard. (40) Storage Area - for railroad ties. (41) Factory Area - several lumber mills and food processing factories were located here. (42) Motor Vehicle Plant - under construction, surrounded by a 2.5-meter-high barbed wire fence. The date of completion was 1960; some shops were already completed and in production of spare parts.
