on the following Soviet military activities observed during the period from
late July through mid-August 1958 at the Merseburg area: arrival of a Soviet
military transport including 12 trucks carrying rocket launchers (a rough
sketch of one of these trucks is submitted); departure of about 200 Soviet
troops; arrival of about 150 Soviet troops; excavation of Trenches at Rott-
huegel; training in radar operation; digging of trenches at Merseburg.Airfield.

Leipzig firm made a water well boring beside each of the concrete
emplacements.
In the A/A barracks Soviet troops have undergone training in radar
oper?:.tion using 3 radar arrays in the barracks. 1 x IL 28 and 1 x ::IG 17
have been used for radar training purposes.
6. MEISEBURG Airfield
Soviet personnel have beer( digging trenches about 50 cm deep between
fuel depots and the taxi-ways. These are believed to be for pipe lines.
Pipes of about 10 cm diameter have been off-loaded
