1. The town of `Kishinev (N 47-01, E 28-50)., capital of
the Moldavian SSR, had. approximately 250,000 inhabitants, half
of whom are Moldavians, and the remainder are Jews and Russians.
2. The Kishinev water works, situated at the corner of
the former Minkovskaya and Balsevskaya Sttr-eets, is administered
by the Vodokanaltrest, which is in charge of water supply and
sewerage in the town. A new works, which has. been under con-
struction in the Buykani quarter since 1956, is expected to
furnish softer water than is now being supplied by the old
plant.

3. The urban thermal power station, situated at the corner
of Lenina Street (formerly Aleksandrovskaya) and Brosieanu StreetLl
supplies only part of the town's electrical requirements. Since
1955-1956 additional current has been supplied by the Dubasaki
hydroelectric station, located about 30 kin from Kishinev.
4. Large-scale housing is under construction along Lenina
Street, and on Kotovski'Street near the cemetery, in the suburb
called "Skulianskaya Rogatka".
Industry
5. A tannery of national importance is situated in the
Benderskaya Rogatka quarter.
6. A cigarette factory ( y inat). is situated
in the Benderskaya Rogatka quarter.
7. An automobile repair plant (od).is
situated in the northern part of town, in the "Skulianskaya
Rogatka" suburb. It consistsfof a one-story workshop and a
two-story office building. This plant, which is solely con-
cerned with civilian vehicles, executes engine overhauls and
other basic repairs on behalf of factories, farms and various
public institutions.

8. On a site referred to as the "old tobacco field" there
is a factory for the manufacture of oil from sunflower seeds.
Near it is a tannery which suppliecLraw material for the leather
industry outside the Moldavian SSR as well.
Public Institutions
9. The central post office, which included a telephone
exchange and telegraph service, is situated at No. 2t Gorki Street.
10. The Supreme Soviet of the Moldavian SSR,is located at
No. 62 Podolskaya Street.
11. The recruiting station of the Moldavian SSR is located
on Kievskaya Street.
12. The Council of Ministers of the Moldavian SSR is located
on Sadovaya Street, at the corner of Zhukovskovo Street. /
13. The health department is on Fontanniy Perevlok.
14. The Kishinev broadcasting station is located on
Pushkina Street, at the corner of Sadovaya Street. V
15. The MVD directorate for the Moldavian SSR and the militia
are located on Lenina Street, at the corner of Ormianskaya Street,
in a three-story building with entrances from both streets.

Until mid-1957 the KGB administration shared this building, but
it later moved to a building on Lenina Street at the corner of
Sergey Lazo Street.
16. The trade union house (Dom Profsoyuza) is located at
the corner of Pushkin and Lenina Streets.
17. The Town Party Committee (Gorkom):is situated in the
municipal council building (Gorsovet) on Lenina Street.
18. The Ministry of Trade is at No. 79 Lenina Street.
19. The Ministry of Food Industry is located at No. 55 or
No. 57 Lenina Street.
Transportation
20. Urban transportation is maintained mainly by a trolley
network which was set up before the war. There are also two
trolley bus lines: the first route starts from the depot at the
end of Lenina Street in the northwestern part of town and passes
down Lenina Street to the passenger railroad station; the second
route leads from the depot through Pushkina and Pirogova Streets.
21. Kishinev's civilian airfield is located between one and
1.5 kilometers south of the town in the Muncesc region. Using
two-engined IL-12 and Douglas aircraft, a passenger service is

maintained to Odessa, Lvov, Moscow, Chernovtsy, Riga, and other
points. The airfield consists merely of an unfenced area of
packed earth, without marked runways or maintenance workshops.
No expansion and development work is being conducted and it is
rumored that the installation will be transferred to some
unspecified location.
Military Information
22. Military units - infantry, artillery and tank - are
stationed in the former Rumanian army barracks in the Buykani
quarter.
23. The military command (Voennaya Komandatura) of Kishinev
is located at No. 7 or No. 9 Zhukova Street.
24. The underground ammunition depots, located south of
the cemetery, were built prior to World War II.
25. The frontier guard command occupies a former school
building at the corner of Kievskaya and Gogola Streets.
Personalities
26. Aleksander Zakharovich Danasevskiy has been chairman
of the Kishinev municipal council (Gorsovet) since 1956.
