Kalinin (N 56-50, E 35-5 , a city of approximately 250,000 inhabitants, is divided into four achninistrative rayons: a. The October Rayon (Okt~abrskiy Rayon), whose main streets are: Sovetskaya, Prospekt Mayakovskovo, Pravda, Kalayeva, and Solodovaya. b. The Proletarian Rayon (Proletarskiy Rayon), whose main streets are : Proletarskaya I, Proletarskaya II, and Proletarskaya III. c. The New Industrial Rayon (Novoprorjshlenn3r Rayon), which is situated in the eastern part of town, beginning about 500 m east of the Kalinin railroad station. With the construction of housing for the workers of the combine in c. 1955, the rayon, which had hitherto been virtually uninhabited, began to develop into a large residential area. At the same time public institutions were constructed; these included a club, a hospital, schools and a movie theater, all of which are assumed to be under the control of the silk plant. d. The Trans-Volgan Rayon (Zavolzhskiy Rayon). This rayon is connected with the center of town by a new steel bridge, completed in 1955, which leads to Sovetskaya Street. An old bridge in the vicinity of the municipal park leads to Musorgskiy Street on the other side of the Volga. The buildings had formerly been occupied by the Old Military Academy, which was transferred to Leningrad in 1957. (14) A military cantonment (Vole Gorodok) under construction on Musorgskiy Street. Soldiers building the cantonment are billeted in tents. (5) A large military building situated at the corner of Naberezhnaya and Sovetskaya Streets, near the Zvezda movie theater. 2. Kalinin's public institutions include the following: a. The Oblispolkom, Obkom, Gorsovet, Gorkom, and Gorkomsomol, which are situated on Pravda Street near the municipal park. b. The MVD oblast directorate, situated on Naber- ezhnaya Volgi Street near the Vulkan movie theater. 3. Kalinin has the following hospitals: a. The oblast hospital (Oblastnaya Bolnitsa), situated R P. The municipal hospital No. 1 (Bolnichniy Gorodok - cantonment hospital), situated along the No. 2 streetcar line, which goes in the direction of the Proletarian Rayon. All the wards for specific diseases, which serve the general population of the town, are concentrated in this hospital. c. The hospital for railroad workers (Zhelezno- Eorozhnaya Bolnitsa), located on Kominterna Street near the railroad station. IZYI s ?~ d. A maternity hospital located on Ribatskaya Street* e. A hospital located in the Proletarian Rayon. f. A military hospital, which probably serves as a garrison hospital, situated on Naberrezhnaya Volgi Street near the Sovetskaya Bolnitsa oblast hospital. g. A garrison clinic, which serves only military personnel, situated on Sovetskaya Street near the Zvezda movie theater. 4. Institutions for higher education: (1) A medical school (Medinstitut) on Sovetskaya Street. (2) A pedagogical institute (Pedinstitut) on Kalaeva Street. A (It is rumored that an industrial institute will be trans- ferred to Kalinin from Leningrad.) b. Secondary vocational schools: (1) Two industrial schools (2) A financial school (3) A forestry school (t4) An agricultural school (5) A school for railroad car construction (6) A medical technical (?) school c. The Suvorovskoye Uchilishche, a military boarding school for boys, is housed in a four-story building on Shkolnaya Street. 5. Transportation in Kalinin is confined mainly to street- cars, although there are some buses. Streetcar lines are as follows: a. Streetcars Nos. 1, 4, and 9 connect the New Industrial Rayon with Lenina Square. c. Streetcar No. 6 connects the meat combine with the railroad station. 6. A hydro-electric power station supplies the town with sufficient current. There have been no cuts in domestic consumption. 7. Peat is used as fuel for both industrial and domestic purposes. It is brought from the vicinity of Vasilevka village, which lies 10-15 km NW of Kalinin. 8. The harbor on the Volga, called Rechnoy Vokzal, extends parallel to Pravda Street on the opposite bank of the Volga. 9. The following individuals were on the staff of the Old Academy in Kalinin: a.
