Right after World War TI, penal 1.abc50X1-HU and German PW camps were located in these settlements. Presently, the old barrack-type one-story houses are being t?rn down and two- and three- story buildings are being erected instead. Upon co~letion of the chemical plants, and, especially, BTZ (Pipe Rolling M311 of Sumgait), the town began to boom, Now it is a modern city with straight,-paved, wide streets built by plan. Present population of the city exceeds 90000 and consists m~ predominantly of Russians, followed by native~Azerbaydzhanians and Armenians 2. All street names (except for a few very new streets which have not been named yet) are indicated on 12 x 50 cm. metal plates. The plates are convex in shape, bulging out from the wall along the long axis, These black plates with white lettering are mounted on corner houses. The whole city is divided into blocks (kvartaly), Usually, the house numbers are the same on both sides of the street, only block numbers would be different. That is, Stalina Street would have two houses #].0 on opposite sides of the street; one would be attached to the 7th block and the other to the $th block, ~?'he house numbers (black metal plates with white lettering), have the block number at the top and the house number at the bottom and are mounted over the gates or entrances to the houses. BTZ has a new two- story club and park ad3acent to ~.t (for locations, see Attachment "A"). SK also has its own club on Lenina Street (#1?6 of Attachment "A").
