The tunnel is located at the 199..kiltxneter mark (kilometers are figured starting from the east (Keleti Palyaudvar) station in Budapest), about 500 meters north of the ~ibali.get railway station, The tunnel is 468 meters longs and the line which passes through it is standard gauge, single tracko The mountain, which is of asndstone, rises to a maximum of ninety meters above the tunnelo B, plans for new railyray line from Satorajaujhely to Kosic? (Czec~oslovaki+a)? 1. II~?r Sovi?t sponsorship,~the Hun~rian and Czechoa"lovakian state railways have began working on a project far the construction of a new railway line from Satorajanjhely to Kosice (~cs~l~eda -~ Hungarian, Kaachau~~r=4erma~n). These nagot3.ations ar? in a iarelim3- nary phaeQ. C. The line, at ].east according to early rumors, will run from Satora- jaujhely through the valley of the Bossva Riser, following the course of the river. In the area around Fuzerkomlos~ the lira will cross the volcanic mountains of Toka j-Eger jes, at which point the border is located. On Czech territory the lime will proceed through th? valley ad' the Tares River as far as Kosie~o 3. This project is just a small part of a vast undertaking which the Soviet and Czech railways have been negotiating for a long timep ,ONOMVNO. 51-5~ PREVIOUS EDITIONS MAY BE USED. c ~} ~/ ~4 ~~ ~ 1 ~ u~.~ ~~ ~ t f ~ CV ~U~l i r ~! a ~. ? qy~ . l . i9 i t"1 50X1-HUM (20) Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/08/23 :CIA-RDP80T00246A052300200001-8 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/08/23 : CIA_-RDP80T00246A052300200001-8 Vi~~tf~~,~~'~~. .~s the transport lines from the IISSR to Czechoslovakia. and Hungary become increasingly important, it becaumes increasingly evident that the rai ay net of the Carpathian Ukraine (which is part of the USSR) insufficient. Equally insufficient is the capacity of the railw~ station at the Soviet, Czech and Hungarian borderso Fca' this reason the USSR is said to have decided to strengthen greatly the railway network in the Carpathian Ukraine and to build at least one new rail line from the Carpathian Ukraine to Eastern Slovakia. ~t least part of the fre3~ht traffic from the USSR to Hungry will no longer be routed via the Cop-2ahony line, but will go by way of Eastern Slovakia. The new line from Satora~at~jhely to Kosice could represent an efficient conn?ction with this new line to the ASSR. C. Railway station at papa. 1? The railway station at papa has be?n rebuilt during the last few years, to repair the damage caused by the war, and the technical equipment has been completely modsrniz?d. previously switching had been hand?operated, but nod at both the east and west ?xits of the station two small automatic s~ritching towers modeled after the English system, have been install@do Tt~e distance between the two towers is 850 meters. 2? In the railway station itself the length of the tracks for passen? ger traffic is 500 meters. Between the single tracks th?re are platforms; the edges xhich face the train are reinforced by cement beams. There are no underpasses; to reach the platforms passengers mast crass the tracks. ,x,11 platfar~ms are covered e~acept that between tracks ~t and 5? 3? To the west of the station the grourxi is lower than the station itself and than the surrounding territory to the north, east~and south. This area is exposed to floods from the Tapolca River, Even when the river ass not overflowing, the ground is marshy because of water underground which rises to the surface. In the months from November to March the area is always under watero The railway lines to Sgan3r and Celdomolk, once outside the station, are elevated one meter` Between these two elevated stretches (which are about 300 meters apart), a system of canalas has been put in which permits the water to flog in a northerly direction. There is AO danger that the station will be flooded because it is four meters above the marshy ground. !to Grade crossings of highways and railw~ tracks are not equipped with safety gates or traffic lights. Th? lire was built under .the provisions of the Darr?nt ifhree-year plans which also p?~ovided for tdze construction north-west of Vaa of a new cement ar~d artificial. stone faetory~ rahich will be the largest of its kind in Hungary Dtsing the construction wank' the Ministry cff D?fense asked that the line be brought up to the foot of Mt. BTagyssal, to ass~e rail connection with the munitions factory located thereo The State planning Office, upon receiving this request from the Defense l!4inistry~ authorized the Hungarian State Railyrays to extend the line. It noun eruls apposite this factory, which is partially undergroundo ?. The new secondary railway line is standard gauge and single-track all th? way. ~,t the munitions plant four spurs have been install?d with a capacity of 5 to 6 cars each. ~ roof has been built over this loading areas so that loading and unloading operations can go on in spite of weather conditions. 4. The connection between the site of the new cement and artific3.a1 stone faatcmy aril the secondary lip lass not been completed, but w111 be as soon as construction work on the factory has reached an advanced staged No further extension of this line is corate~aplated. In order to carry out the extension ixa question, which presents enormous technical difficulties it will be necessary to make a tunnel through Mt. B'agyszal (perforare it massiccio)? E.
