1. A course in chemical defense (khimzashchita) is given in the fifth (last)
year of Moscow State University medical school. This course lasts four
hours a day, seven days a week,-.and. is a compulsory course. Laboratory
experiments are carried out on rats during the course, to show the effects
of various chemicals which are employed in warfare. World War II text-
books are used in the course. Course examinations are required of female
students, but male-students complete the course during their summer military
training. Available in the CIA Library, from which photocopies can be
obtained, are a 39-page English translation and the original notes which
were taken in the class during the 1958-1959 school year. Foreign students
attended this class.
2. A public health course which is given in the medical school requires the
reading by students of two publications on civil defense. The publications
are Organization of the Medical Service of the MPVO (Organizatsiya
meditsinskoy sluzhby, MPVO), by Abramov, and B of the Organization of
the Work of Formation-and Establishment of the Medical Service of MPVO,
by I. M. Timko. Answers to the following questioner were required in the
final examination for this course:
a. Characteristics of the center of an explosion in a mass attack. This
question concerned the destructive effects of atomic and hydrogen
bombs, for which statistics were taken from U. S. experiments.
b. The tasks and activities of the Medical Service (MS) of Local Anti-
air Defense (MPVO).
c. Principles of the organization of the MS/MPV0.
d. The mobile units of the MS/MPVO.

e. The medical groups and posts for search for~and transportation of;
wounded. Groups of 23 persons have been organized in factories to
act as units in case of air attack. The posts are manned by four
persons. Groups of 125 students from the twelfth year of school
and the first three university classes will be employed to transport
the wounded to aid stations*
f. The collection and classification of first aid groups and detachments;
each group contains twelve nurses.
g. Permanent installations of the MS/MPVO.
h. Permanent medical aid points, their structure and tasks.
i. The role of city and rayon hospitals in the work of the MS/MPVO.
j. The structure and tasks of the classification/evacuation bases.
k. Classification and evacuation hospitals.
