Devices
2. The R-4 is used for measuring the thickness of the walls of tubing and of
sheet material. In tubing, the thickness and deviations therein may be
measured in steel tubes with walls, up to 5 m Lprobably mm is mean thick,
and in aluminum and plastic tubes with walls up to 20 mm. The tubes may
be from 30 to 120 mm in diameter. Sheet materials of steel, aluminum,
or plastic, with thicknesses corresponding to those of the tubes1may
also be measured. The radiation source is a crystal of sodium iodide
activated by thallium204, with an activity of 20 mC. The device operates
on an alternating current of 220 V, 50 cycles. A fluctuation of plus
or minus 10 percent in the voltage does not influence the accuracy of
the measurements. The size of the device is 230 by 190 by 230 mm and it
weighs 7.9 kilograms.
