1. Piatra-Neamt is a district town in Rumania, with a` total population of
36,000. During the post-war years, the town's timber industry has been
developed and plants for the manufacture of textiles and sunflower seed
oil have been established.
2. Following are details on the locations of the public institutions in
Piatra-Neamt:
a. The district council occupies the first floor of a two-story building,
20 by 140 meters, which is located on the corner of Strada I.C. Frimu
on the right-hand side of Strada I.V. Stalin, coming from the town
center. The groundfloor of this building houses the court, state
notary's office, prosecution, and the offices of the legal aid
collective. Formerly, the building housed only the court and pro-
secution.
b. The town council occupies a two-story house, 25 by 20 meters (formerly
a private residence), which is located on the left-hand side of
Strada I.C. Frimu, coming from the direction of the Bistrita River.
c. The Securitate occupies the second and third buildings past the
junction with Strada Unirii (formerly Bistritei), on the left-hand
side of Bulevardul Republicei, coming from the direction of the rail-
road station. The first of the two buildings, which is a 15 by 12
meter single-story former private residence, houses the Securitate
offices, whereas the second building, which is identical to the first,
has been divided into apartments for officers.
d. The militia occupies a single-story former private residence, 25 by
15 meters in size with an additional story in front, which is locate
on the right-hand side of a short street connecting Strada Stefan V,

Cel Mare and Puskin Street. The house is situated in a large courtyard.
e. The prison, where suspects are detained during their interrogation,
occupies two single-story buildings, 10 by 12 meters, which are located
on the right-hand side of the extension of Strada V.I. Lenin, on the far
side of the bridge over the Cuejdiu River. After the prisoners have been
sentenced, they are transferred to prisons in other towns.
f. The post and telegraph office and the offices of the telephone exchange
occupy the old single-story post office building (20 by 20 meters in
size), which is located on the left-hhnd side of Strada Puskin, coming
from the direction of Piata Karl Marxq, The town's semi-automatic telephone
exchange is located in a single-story building, 15 by 10 meters in size,
on the left-hand side of Bulevardul Republicei in the section between
Strada Stefan Gheorghiu and Strada Puskin. According to plan, it is to
be replaced by a fully automatic exchange and transferred to the post
office building.
g. The State and Agricultural Banks occupy the former three-story National
Bank building, which is located at the corner of the street leading to
Strada Puskin, on the left-hand side of Strada Stefan Cel Mare, coming
from Piata Karl Marx.
h. The Investments Bank occupies a single-story former private residence,
20 by 10 meters in size, which is located almost opposite the District
Council, on the right-hand side of Strada I.C. Frimu, coming from the
direction of the railroad station. The same building also houses the
offices of a construction enterprise which is now being dissolved.
i. The Savings Bank (CEC) occupies one room in a single-story building, on
the left-hand side of Strada Puskin, opposite Piata 6 Martie, coming from
the direction of Piata Karl Marx.
2. NRli.tary objectives in Piatra-Neamt are located as follows:
a. The military commissariat occupies two single-story building, which are
located in a large courtyard on the left-hand side of Strada Stefan
Stinca, coming from the direction of Strada I.V. Stalin.
b. The fire brigade barracks, a single-story building situated in a 50
by 30 meter courtyard, is located on the left-hand side of Strada Ilie
Pintilie, coming from the direction of the railroad station,
c. The barracks of an infantry unit (strength unknown) are located at a
distance of some four kilometers from the town center, on the left-hand
side of the extension of Strada Victorieie
d. Ammunition stores are located at a distance of 5 to 6 kilometers from the
infantry barracks, some 1400 meters from the same side of the road.
e. An underground military petrol store is located to the right of Strada
Peste Vale coming from the town in the direction of the Anexa Valeni
Quarter (formerly Valeni Village). The fuel is conveyed to the store
by underground pipes from a fuel pumping station which is located by the
tracks in the vicinity of the railroad station.
f. A huge underground fuel depot was constructed between 1952-1960 at a
distance of some two kilometers from Piatra-Neamt, to the right of the
road to Sarata Village. The depot is connected to the main railway line

by a spur and it also includes a fuel unloading station. As of May
1960, the depot had not been put into operation.
g. The AVSAP (Asociatia Voluntarilor Pentru Sprijinirea Spararii Patriei)
occupies one room in a single-story building, opposite the District
Council on Strada I.C. Frimu.
3. Medical institutions are located as follows:
a. State Hospital No. 1 which occupies a large three-story building on the
corner of Strada Victoriei and Strada Sub Pietricica, comprises internal,
surgical and gynaecological wards. In the courtyard, a small single-
story building houses a maternity home and children's clinic.
b. State Hospital No. 2 for infectious diseases, which includes a small
tuberculosis dispensary, is located on the left-hand side of Strada Stefan
Cel Mare, coming from the direction of Piata Karl Marx.
c. The blood bank and Sanepid Department occupy a two-story building which
formerly housed the Vorel Pharmacy, on the corner of the street leading
to Bulevardul Ilie Pintilie, on Strada Cuza Voda.
dp The central and children's dispensary occupies a three-story building,
40 by 20 meters in size, which yas constructed during 1952-1955 on the
left-hand side of Strada Locotenent Dragescu, coming from the direction
of Bulevardul 9 Mai.
4. The educational institutions of Piatra-Neamt include the following:
a. A co-educational high school now occupies the former high school building
which is located behind the sports grounds on Strada Pusking.
b. Co-educational High School No. 1 now occupies the former girlat school
building, which is located on the right-hand side of the road at the be-
ginning of Strada Stefan Cel Mare, coming from the direction of Piata
Karl X arx.
c. A forestry school is housed in a two- or three-story building, 25 by 20
meters in size, which was constructed around 1953/1954,
d. A commercial school is located in the northern section of the town,
on the right-hand side of Strada V.I. Lenin coming from the direction of
the town center.
e. A large high school is under construction at a distance of some 3.5 kilo-
meters from the town center, on the right-hand side of Strada Victoriei.
5. Industrial plants in Piatra-Neamt include the following:
a. The old power station has been dismantled and its generators transferred
elsewhere. It now serves as a garage for the town's buses.
b. The transformer station is located at the western end of the town on the _
left-hand side of Strada I.V. Stalin, coming from the town center.
Piatra-Neamt is connected to the national electric network and has
220V A.C. current.
c. The Comuna Din Paris paper mill is located virtually opposite the above-
mentioned transformer station, on Strada I.V. Stalin.

d. The "Reconstructia" cellulose plant is located on the left bank of
the Bistrita River. The plant includes a department for the manu-
facture of paper bags.
e. The "Scinteialt sawmill, which is equipped with two frames, is located
opposite the railroad station.
f. The "Steaua Rosie" sawmill, equipped with some three or four frames, is
located in the vicinity of the "Scinteia" sawmill,
g. Another sawmill, which is equipped with six frames, is located on the
right-hand side of Strada I.V. Stalin, coming from the direction of the
town center.
h. Another sawmill with six frames is located virtually opposite the
infantry barracks.
i. The "Ceahlaul" factory, which manufactures seed drills and narrow-gauge
railroad cars, is located on the right-hand side and at the beginning
of Strada Unirii, coming from the direction of Bulevardul 9 Mai. The
plant employs some 200 workers.
j. Mechanical carpentry shops, foundries and small workshops which manu-
facture various chemical materials are subordinate to the local metal
and chemical industry (Industria Locala Metalo-Chimica), whose offices
are located on Strada Paharnic.
k. Timber processing workshops, flour mills, bakeries and small conserves
factories are subordinate to the 1123 August" local industry offices,
which are located on the left-hand side of Bulevardul Ilie Pintilie,
coming from the direction of Strada Victoriei.
1. The offices of the timber industrialization institution (I.F.I.L. -
Intreprinderea Forestiera Pentru Industrializarea Lemnului), which deals
with the exploitation of forests for industrial purposes, are located on
the left-hand side of Strada Peste Vale, coming from the direction of
Anexa Valeni.
6. Following are details of the town's public transport facilities:
a. The railroad station, which has nine tracks, is located at the beginning
of Bulevardul Republicei.
b. The offices of the "IRTA" transport concern are located on the corner
of Strada Vasile Stinca, and Strada I.V. Stalin.
c. The "IRTA" garages are located opposite the "IRTA" offices.
d. The town is served by two bus routes. Interurban buses which begin
at Piatra-Neamt travel to Iasi (extended to Brosteni in the summer months),
Vatra Dornei, Gheorgheni, and Borsec.
