C-O-N-F-I-D-E-N-T-I-A-L COUNTRY China Ithe cave of the Peking man at Cho ou ien. The road from Peiping to the cave was of Tarmac surface, in excellent condition, and registered a distance of 37 miles on the speedometer. PLACE & DATE AC a. 13 miles: Marco Polo Bridge. b. 17 miles: Check post manned by security police. A large sign carried warnings in both English and Chinese to the effect that the area beyond was restricted to foreigners, except for those persons with special permits. Personal identity cards and special permits issued by the Foreign Office were shown to the security police. c. 23 miles: Paratroops were seen dropping from transport planes in farm lands less than a mile northwest of the highway. At least 39 persons with multi-colored parachutes were counted in the air. A large military cantonment and airfield were also seen. d. 29 miles: A first class Tarmac road led westward from the main highway to the atomic reactor plant located 3-4 miles from the road junction. The junction was guarded by a uniformed policeman. High- tension wires crossed the road here and they appeared to lead to:the reactor plant, the military cantonment, and airfield. e. Soon thereafter, a small building, a radar, and other electronic equipment were seen on a small hill to the west of the highway. The surrounding area of the hill was clearly defined by white boundary pillars. f. Near the foot of the hill, the highway crossed a railway which ran past a large cement plant.
