The town's main streets (Kop,,r.ii:r, Ivana Franko, Lenina and: Permishlanakaya) were asphalt- paved and the remaining streets were stone-surfaced. There was no bu$ transportation. All the houses were two or three-storied brick constructions. The water supply was obtained from wells operated y _.and pumps, and there was no central sewerage system. Borislav '9-17, E23-25 furnished electric power for the town. The town's places of entertainment consisted of two cinemas, a municipal cultural center, and a rail- ways cultural center. 2. . Military units stationed in Sambor were: a. An artillery regiment (art. polk), equipped with 122-mm. howitzers, which was stationed on di. Lenina in buildings of the former commercial high school (during the Polish admin- istration). b. A signal unit, including radio and radar stations, which was stationed on i1. Peremishlanskaya, on the outskirts of town, in barracks of a pre-war cavalry unit. 3. The following industries were in Sambor: a. The Sambor sugar factory (Semborskiy Sakharny Zavod), which was located in the north end of town and which had a railway spur leading into the plant compound. The factory began operation in 1955, and during the season of 1958-1959 employed some 400 workers. Most of its equipment was of East German manufacture, although the plant had a 3000-kilowatt Czech turbo-generator which operated by coal until 1958 and subse- quently by gas from Dashava ON 9-16, E24-OJ. During its peak season (September to March), the sugar factory used only 1800 kilowatts, and the remaining power was used to supply the town. During 1958-1959 the factory produced 3000 tons of sugar. The refuse (molasses) was given to an alcohol distillery in the village of Voyutyche L9-33, E23-067, about 10 kilometers northwest of Sambor, although a plan existed to build an alcohol distillery at the factory site. b. The clothing factory (Sheveynaya Fabrika) on Muzealnaya Street, which manufactured mainly men's clothes, employed some 800 workers in two shifts. c. The glass factory (Stekolny Zavod) on Valova Street, which began operation in 1956, employed some 60 workers. d. The locomotive repair shop (Parovoznoye Depo), which employed approximately 150 workers. 4. Sambor had the following schools: five 10-grade schools, a medical school (med. tekhnikum) at 13 Peremishlanskaya Street, a school for cultural workers (kult-prosvet tekhnikum) on Mitskevkha Street, a commercial school (torgovoye tekhnikum) on Lenina Street, a pedagogical school (ped. tekhnikum) on Kalinina Street, and a statistical school (statisticheskoye tekhnikum). 5. The following government offices and public institutions were located in Sambor: a. The town MVD office on Krasnoarmeyskaya Street; the local militia numbered some 50 men. b. The town KGB office on Krasnoarmeyskaya Street opposite the MVD office.
