The Party operates also the so-called Lvening Universities of Mar-
,ism-Leninism / WUML / in voivodship cities except *Iarsaw. The
WUML have two departments: 1. Department of Economics and 2. De-
partment of History and Philisophy. The students of the Department
of Economics study the following subjects: political economics of
capitalism and socialism, economics of industry and of industrial
enterprises, the basis of economic and theoretical statistics, the
basis of industrial accounting and the basis of the Marxist phile-.
sophy and sociology.
The students of the Department of History and Philosophy study the
history of international worker movements since 164, the history
of the Polish worker movements since 1794, the history of philo-
sophy and the Marxist philosophy and socioloxw.

a week over the period of two years. Semester examinations take
place in February and June. On the days when classes are hel4
students are released, earlier from their professional work, 'hey
also receive cut rate transportation tickets and 14 days vacation
during the school year.
Every WORKING individual may apply for admission, both Party memw
bers tjnd non-party individuals. Classes begin usually in Septeai?
bero, he Party members must be recommended by theist Basic Party
Organisations while nonparty individuals must be recommended
by the departments of " cadres" of their place of work. The cand1-
dates must have secondary education completedi. There are no err
trance examinations and there is no formal age limit. Older can-
didates may be occasionally exempt from the secondary education
condition.
Classes are usually held between 2 and 7 P.M. lnetructors are
recruited from local institutions of higher learning and in cities
where there are not such institutions instructors are brought
from other cities, The standing personnel, including director,
deputy directors and secretaries are supplied by the Party organi?
cations.
lghe number of students varies from city to city and figures are
seldom released. The only figures released in the second part
of 1961 are those by the Evening University of Marxism??Leninisa
in Opel.. According to the release, 100 individuals graduated
from the " university" in 1960. In 1961 there were 120 students
attending the second year of the course and 180 students enrolled
in September of 1961 which indicates an increase in number of
students.
