sweaters and T-shirts for men, women and children. Most of
the production is for domestic use; only a small quantity is
exported to countries of the Soviet Bloc. The plant is
equipped with 800 to 900 modern knitting machines which were
made by the Caterina Varga plant of Cluj. Work on the.con-
structian.-of new buildings has been in progress for about one
year; reportedly, they are to be completed by the summer of
1962. These buildings are being constructed on the south.
side of the plant, outside bf the enclosure and will reach
almost as far as the Viale Cluj, Their future use is unknown.
3. Various unidentified military units stationed in Oradea were
described as follows: 50X1-HUM
a. Units are located in a block of 8 to 10 old barracks in
the southwest area of Oradea astride the Viale Armate Rosu,
south of the Park, on the road which leads to the civil
airport of Oradea. As many as 20 armored vehicles were
seen leaving the area at one time. These vehicles,
called "cadeur" were equipped with a single
cannon with a barre about meters long. The strength
of these units was estimated to be about 4,000 men. 50X1-HUM
b. A firefighting unit which is assigned to the Rumanian
Army is quartered in barracks on Mihail Kogalniceanu
Street, in the southern section of Oradea. The strength
of the unit is between 700 and 800 men. Among other equip-
ment, the unit has seven or eight modern pumpers with
portable ladders. The personnel of this unit are re-
cruited directly from civilian life, and service performed
with the unit counts as draft service in the Armed Forces.
c. A school for officers of the Securitate is located in
Oradea. Students at this school take a 2-year course
which begins in January of each year. At the end of the
course, the students' receive the rank of second lieutenant.
4. In the fall of 1961, work was completed on the asphalting of
the highway from Oradea to Arad. The portion of the road
from Oradea to Inand, which was previously asphalted, was re-
surfaced. The remainder of the road (Inand-Arad), was paved.
The highway is 126 kilometers long and is six to seven meters
wide.
5. In late November or early December 1961, atrial for 20
persons was held in Oradea at the civil court, behind closed
doors. The defendants were all connected with Oradea
Secondary School No. 4, and had been implicated in a con-
spiracy against the State. They had been accused of setting
up an anti-government group for the specific purpose of
bringing about and conducting propaganda for the annexation
of Transylvania to Hungary. At the time of their arrest,

they were found to be in possession of weapons, ammunition
and propaganda leaflets. The trial was held very rapidly
and lasted only a few hours, Although the trial was kept
secret and. was not reported by the press, the information
leaked but through the families of the defendants. Persons
involved included five professors and 15 students. The
group was headed by a professor of physics and chemistry
named Andrasi (fnu). The professors were sentenced to 35
years imprisonment and the students received sentences varying
from 6 to 20 years. As a result of the trial, all students of
Secondary School No. 4 were subjected to a screening by a
political commission. All persons who were considered '.
guilty of support or implication, even moral support, were
expelled immediately and forced to take up manual labor in
