PROBABLE UPGRADING OF SOVIET SCUD BRIGADE
BORNE, POLAND (S)
1. (TSR) A review of previous imagery and
Army Barracks Sulinowo 201
that the Soviet SCUD brigade garrisoned at Borne
Poland, is probably being upgraded to include 18 launchers. Previously, nine to 12 launchers were
assigned to the hrigade.
2. (TSR) A new probable SCUD brigade area has been under construction adjacent to the
old SCUD brigade area at Borne (Figure 1) since April 1975. A detailed analysis of this activity
revealed an increase in the amount of closed vehicle storage space from an approximate capacity
of' 300 vehicles in the old SCUD area to at least 400 vehicles in the new area. A I2-launcher SCUD
brigade would probably not require this amount of vehicle storage space. Since spring 1978, the
construction has been paralleled by a concurrent dismantling of vehicle storage sheds in the old
SCUD area (Figure 2).
3. (TSR) As of the new SCUD area consisted of a probable I8-hay,
double-depth SCUD transporter-erecter-launcher (TEL) vehicle storage building: two probable
launch battalion support areas, each consisting of two 29-bay, double-depth vehicle storage sheds:
a third probable launch battalion support area in an early stage of construction: and a probable
maintenance building under construction (Figure 3). The third battalion support area will also
probably contain two 29-hay, double-depth vehicle sheds.
4. (TSR) The first indication of a probable 18-launcher SCUD brigade in the Soviet forces in
Iastern Europe was the identification of a probable six-launcher battalion at
Although no additional SCUD TELs have been seen at Borne Army Barracks Sulinowo 201, the
construction pattern, the increased vehicle storage capacity, and the ongoing dismantling of the
old SCUD area indicate that the Borne SCUD brigade is probably now in the process of being
upgraded.
