Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/11/10: CIA-RDP80TO1355A000100200001-5 1. (C) This glossary of approved, standard nomenclature terms for ground forces equipment will be published in seven sections. The section format with individual pages has been used to facilitate updating of the glossary in the future. The glossary has been prepared for use in a standard loose leaf binder. Standard terms are in the left-hand column; the length of the terms was determined by a space limitation of 24 characters in the Object (OB) sector of the Installation Data File (IDF). It is recom- mended that the ground forces weapons (GFW) trinome of the Worldwide Initial Photo Interpretation Report (WWIPIR) be used when reporting equipment observed either at a ground forces installation or in a ground forces unit. Terms that are set in boldface type are those used for general identification by category when it is either impossible or unnecessary to identify the specific piece of equipment. Interim designators are indicated by the use of an asterisk (*). Useful information about a piece of equipment (as well as any previously used term or title) is included in the right-hand column, in free-text format. Only those terms used by NPIC are included in the left-hand column. 2. (C) The seven sections of the glossary are as follows: Warsaw Pact (WP); The People's Repub- lic of China (PRC); North Korea (KN); the United States (US); Great Britain (UK); France (FR); and Other (OTH). Pagination includes the abbreviated section name. Information pertaining to the use of each section will be provided in the introduction to the specific section. 3. (U) The glossary will be reviewed on a semiannual basis, and future supplemental sections and revisions will be published as new identifications are made and existing information is updated. 4. (U) The first section of this glossary was published under R-01/80; the second and third sections are published under R-02/80.
