SS-21 TACTICAL SSM BATTALION
KOROSTEN ARMY BARRACKS NNE AL 4, USSR (S)
1. (SAD) SS-21 tactical surface-to-surface missile (SSM) equipment in probable battalion
configuration was newl identified in a tactical SSM training area at Korosten Army Barracks
NNE AL-4 USSR, This battalion is
probably subordinate to the 23rd Tank Division' headquartered at Ovruch Headquarters Tank
Division/Army Barracks AL-1 It is not known at this time if the SS-21 equip-
ment is replacing or augmenting the existing FROG equipment. Four SS-21 transporter-erector-
launchers (TELs; Figure 2) and four SS-21 resupply vehicles (Figure 3) were observed. The vehicles
were in an area containing three drive-through SSM firing positions. Additional equipment in-
cluded three probable BMP M-1978 armored command vehicles, three BTR-60PU armored com-
mand vehicles, and 12 associated communications and support vehicles.
2. (S/D) Korosten Army Barracks NNE AL-4 is a training area used primarily by the 23rd
Tank Division' (an experimental tank division) in the Carpathian Military District. The presence
of the SS-21 equipment in probable battalion strength at this training area suggests that the
tactical SSM battalion for this division has been equipped with the SS-21 tactical SSM. The
tactical SSM battalion is believed to be in garrison at Ovruch Headquarters Tank Division/Army
Barracks AL-1 ,approximately 14 nautical miles north of the training area. Although no SS-21
equipment has been seen in the Ovruch Barracks, six SS-21 TELs/resupply vehicles were seen
being offloaded at Ovruch Railroad Yard
3. (S/D) The only other known deployment of the SS-21 tactical SSM was seen at Minsk
Headquarters Motorized Division/Army Barracks AL-1/SA 6 Facility in the
Belorussian Military District. The SS-21 tactical SSM was first deployed in April 1976. Because of
the vehicle storage space available at Ovruch Headquarters Tank Division/Army Barracks AL-I,
it is not clear whether the SS-2l battalion seen in the training area at Korosten has replaced the
FROG battalion at Ovruch Headquarters Tank Division/Army Barracks AL-1 or has augmented
the FROG battalion until final testing and familiarization of the SS-21 system is complete.
