SIGNIFICANCE: THIS BRIEFING BOARD DEPICTS NEW CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY AT HANOI/ GIA LAM AIRFIELD. 2. LOCATION: HANOI/GIA LAM AIRFIELD IS LOCATED 2.3 NM NORTHEAST OF HANOI. 3. BACKGROUND: HANOI/GIA LAM AIRFIELD IS ONE OF THE MAJOR AIRFIELDS IN NORTH VIETNAM. PRIOR TO 19)1-0 A WELL-DISPERSED SYSTEM OF AIRFIELDS WAS CREATED BY THE FRENCH. THESE AIRFIELDS WERE LATER USED BY THE JAPANESE DURING WORLD WAR II. AFTER THE WAR THE FRENCH UNDERTOOK A GRADUAL PROGRAM OF AIRFIELD REHABILITATION AND EXPANSION. WITH THE ADVENT OF THE VIET MINH OFFENSIVE, THE AIRFIELD ASSUMED AN EVEN MORE IMPORTANT ROLE AND FACILITIES WERE ADDED OR EXPANDED. WHEN HOSTILITIES CEASED IN JULY 195+ THE FRENCH REMOVED LARGE AMOUNTS OF EQUIPMENT FROM THE HANOI/HAIPHONG AREA AIRFIELDS BEFORE TURNING THEM OVER TO THE VIET MINH. SINCE THEN, AIR TRANSPORTATION DEVELOPMENT IN NORTH VIETNAM HAS BEEN SPONSORED BY COMMUNIST CHINA UNDER AN AGREEMENT PROVIDING FOR COMMUNIST CHINESE AID IN ESTABLISHING AIR AND METEORLOGICAL STATIONS These notes have been prepared for briefing purposes only and should not be used for detailed analytical work. IN 1955, THE NORTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT ESTABLISHED A CIVIL AIR ORGANIZATION WITH HEADQUARTERS AT HANOI/GIA LAM AIRFIELD. 4. REMARKS: PHOTOGRAPHY OF EARLY SEPTEMBER 1965 REVEALED HANOI/GIA LAM AIRFIELD TO CONSIST OF A 6,100 X 100 FT. NNE/SSW CONCRETE RUNWAY WITH A 650 FT. EXTENSION UNDER CONSTRUCTION ON THE NNE END AND GRADING ACTIVITY EXTENDING APPROXIMATELY 1,200 FT. BEYOND THE RUNWAY EXTENSION. A 5,800 X 320 FT. NW/SE CONCRETE RUNWAY WAS BEING USED AS A PARKING AREA. FACILITIES INCLUDED ONE HANGAR, NUMEROUS SUPPORT BUILDINGS, A WEATHER STATION, A POL STORAGE AREA ON THE NORTHWEST END OF THE NW/SE RUNWAY, AND SIXTEEN AIRCRAFT REVETMENTS WITH EXHAUST VENTS. 5. MISSION READOUT: BLUE SPRINGS REVEALS HANOI/GIA LAM AIRFIELD 25X1 TO CONSIST OF A 6,555 X 90 FT. NNE/SSW SERVICEABLE CONCRETE RUNWAY, INCLUDING A NEW 1,150 FT. EXTENSION ON THE NNE END AND A 5,800 X 320 FT. NW/SE SERVICEABLE CONCRETE RUNWAY. NO APPARENT CHANGE IS NOTED IN FACILITIES SINCE SEPTEMBER 1965. AIRCRAFT OBSERVED CONSIST OF SEVEN CRATE, FIVE CAB, THREE COLT, SEVEN MAX/MOOSE, AND THREE HOUND.
