MEMORANDUM FOR: Assistant Deputy Director for Intelligence
SUBJECT Newly Completed History in the Directorate
of Intelligence Historical Series
1. I am forwarding to you herewith the DDI's copy
(Copy 2 of 3). signed by Arthur C. Lundahl, of a history
of NPIC entitled National Photographic
Interpretation Center: Antecedents and Early Years, 1952-1956.
T is is Volume I of the projected t ree-volume narrative his-
tory of NPIC through 1961.
2. This history traces the early years of photo intelli-
gence in CIA--from the first suggestion in 1950 of the utility
of such an activity through the creation of a small unit in
ORR to support research ana-
ys s, its development into a division producing intelligence
on its own initiative, and finally into an organization pre-
pared to exploit the unique source material collected by the
first U-2 flights over Communist areas in 1956. During the
entire period treated, the photo interpretation activity
continued to be organizationally located within ORR.
3. If you will return this DDI copy to me when you have
finished with it, I will maintain appropriate custody of it 25X1A
along with other completed histories by DDI authors.
