(S/D) This report summarizes Iraqi and Iranian military activity during the period from 18 through 23 September 1980. IRAQ Ground Activity 2. (S/D) Elements of six Iraqi maneuver divisions were out of garrison. These include units from the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 10th Armored Divisions and the 1st and 5th Mechanized Infantry Divisions.' 3. (S/D) At Tolafarush Search Area A 576 artillery battalion, one infantry battalion, and an Approximately 350 vehicles were presen moving north along the road north of Jalula. a vehicle concentration with one defense battalion was at 34-17-ION 045-20-30E. (S/D) No bomb damage or craters were observed in the Al Basrah area. however, defensive positions and personnel trenches were observed throughout the area. 6. (S/D) An SA-6 regiment, previously in the vicinity of Al Basrah had redeployed to the east bank of the Shatt Al Arab River when observed Three SA-6 battalions were observed on the east bank and two SA-6 battalions were still deployed on the west bank in the vicinity of Al Basrah. 7. (S/D) On the east bank of the Shatt Al Arab during this reporting company, an artillery battalion, and support units were deployed approximately 4 nautical miles (nm) north of Al Basrah. A mechanized infantry battalion was deployed 16 nm north of Al Basrah and elements of a tank battalion in convoy formation were on the road immediately west of the mechanized infantry battalion (headed north-northwest). Elements of two combined-arms companies and an artillery battery were deployed 8 nm northeast of Al Basrah. In addition, a ZSU-23/4 self-propelled antiaircraft battery, an antitank battery, and at least one UAZ-69 antitank guided missile battery were deployed on the north bank of the Shatt Al Arab between Al Basra and the Iran/Iraq border. (S/) At Tikrit Barracks Division And Brigade Headquarters Albu Ali Ar DC one 130mm M-46 field artillery battalion was out of garrison on 19 September. 12. (S/D) At Tikrit Barracks Division And Brigade Headquarters Albu Ali two tank battalions and one mechanized infantry battalion minus were out of garrison A convoy of 33 transporters carrying unidentified armored vehicles was parked along a road, facing the installation, approximately 3 nm north of the installation. One combined-arms mechanized infantry com- pany (14 BMP armored personnel carriers-APCs, nine tanks, three ZSU-23/4, one BTR 60 APC, and two BRDM armored cars) was in garrison. 13. (S/D) At Tikrit Training/Maneuver Area A 826 three tank battalions, one mechanized infantr battalion and ne probable 130mm M-46 field gun battalion were involved in a field training exercise An additional 130mm M-46 field gun battalion, in convoy, was ap- proaching from the west along a road 8 nrii north of this area. Five additional 130mm M-46 field guns were in battery formation near the convoy.
