IRAQ/IRAN MILITARY SUMMARY
18-23 SEPTEMBER 1980 (S)
1. (S/D) This report summarizes Iraqi and Iranian military activity during the period from 18
through 23 September 1980.

of a tank battalion in convoy formation were on the road immediately west of the mechanized infantry
battalion (headed north-northwest). Elements of two combined-arms companies and an artillery battery
were deployed 8 nm northeast of Al Basrah. In addition, a ZSU-23/4 self-propelled antiaircraft battery, an
antitank battery, and at least one UAZ-69 antitank guided missile battery were deployed on the north
bank of the Shatt Al Arab between Al Basra and the Iran/Iraq border. A tank company is deployed 14 nm
southeast of Al Basrah.

BRDM armored cars) was in garrison.
13. (S/D) At Tikrit Training/Maneuver Area A 826 three tank battalions, one
mechanized infantr battalion and ne probable 130mm M-46 field gun battalion were involved in a field
training exercise An additional 130mm M-46 field gun battalion, in convoy, was ap-
proaching from the west along a road 8 nrii north of this area. Five additional 130mm M-46 field guns
were in battery formation near the convoy.
