RESERVE SIGNAL DEPOT IDENTIFIED AT SOL-ILETSK
IN THE VOLGA MILITARY DISTRICT, USSR (S)
1. (S/D) Detailed analysis of the Sol-Iletsk Ordnance Depotl I in the USSR 25X1
revealed that it is a reserve signal depot rather than an ordnance depot as designated.
2. (S/D) approximately 540 vehicles parked in open storage 25X1
(mostly radio communications vans) were identified at Sol-Iletsk Ordnance Depot in the Volga
Military District (Figure 1). A potentially greater storage capacity exists at this installation with
the presence of 23 double-depth vehicle storage buildings. Ten of these buildings have a capacity
to house an approximate total of 430 vehicles. The remaining 13 buildings appear to be drive
through with four entrance/exit bays at either end. If longitudinal parking were adopted, then
each of the 13 drive-through buildings could house an estimated 36 vehicles or a total of 468
vehicles.
3. (S/D) Equipment identified in open storage included the following: three BTR- 25X1
50 PU armored command vehicles (ACVs); 17 BTR-60 PU ACVs, eight R-406 MERCURY
PLATE trailers; 39 probable R-400/404 radio relay sets; 48 R-405 sets; eight R-401 sets (GAZ-63
chassis); seven R-l 10 sets; 17 probable R-142, 25 R-125, and 55 R-118 BM-3 (radio sets); five KROSS-
66 communications center vehicles; 79 GAZ-66 van trucks; eight P-284 M 1 cable layers; eight cable
plows; 14 BKGM-66-2 augers; and 50 other support vehicles. Also observed in open storage were
numerous cable spools.
4. (S/D
that were not seen
EAR, R-136, and R-102M.
several other types of communications vehicles
They included R-410 TWIN PLATE, R-133 TWIN
5. (S/D) A major reduction in the number of communications vehicles appears to have
occurred at this depot since July 1979. only 298 vehicles were
observed in open storage (Figure 2). However, the possibility that the reduction is due to vehicles
being under roof cannot be ruled out.
6. (S/D) The size of the installation, the small complement of barracks/administration
facilities, the communications equipment present, and the lack of training facilities indicate that
this installation serves as a reserve signal depot rather than as an ordnance depot.
