IRAQ/IRAN MILITARY SUMMARY
1. (S/D) This report summarizes imagery-derived intelligence on Iraqi and Iranian military activity
from The report discusses deployed ground forces in the forward area of 25X1
conflict, rear-area garrison units, airfields, naval bases, oil refineries, an air warning radar facility, and the
deployment of Iraqi aircraft to Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and North Yemen (Figures 1 and 2). Additional
reports will be issued as the situation changes.
2. (S/D) Ground force activity relating to the continuing hostilities between Iraq and Iran was
observed in the Khorramshahr/Al Basrah area, the Dezful area and the area around Qasr-E Shrin. Nine
Iraqi airfields; 15 Iranian airfields; one Iraqi naval base; three Iranian naval bases; POL facilities in the Al
Basrah, Baghdad, Kirkuk, and Tehran areas; a damaged Iranian early warning site; and commercial
shipping activity in the Gulf of Oman and the Shatt Al Arab are discussed in this report.
3. (S/D) The most significant observed ground force activity was in the Dezful and Qasr-E Shirin
areas of Iran. In the area west of Dezful an Iraqi armored brigade and a mechanized infantry brigade were
advancing toward Dezful with a small Iranian force attempting to block them. A second Iraqi force,
probably part of the 1st Mechanized Infantry Division,' was approaching Dezful from the southwest. At
Qasr-E Shirin, the Iraqi unit had flanked the city on three sides.
4. (S/D) In the Iraqi rear garrison areas, movement of additional units and equipment from garri-
sons was observed, including elements of two nondivisional SCUD brigades, a FROG unit, and PMP
bridging equipment. In addition, continued dispersal of equipment was observed within these facilities. An
Iranian airstrike was in progress in the Mawsil (Mosul) area on the morning of 25X1
5. (S/D) In the Iranian rear garrison areas there was a decrease of equipment at one facility in the
Kermanshah area, while two other areas further east remained static or had a slightly increased amount of
equipment in garrison.
6. (S/D) Other activity included the damaging of an Iranian early warning radar at Dezful. One Iraqi and
three Iranian naval facilities were seen with no evidence of hostilities discernible. Observation of vessels in the
Gulf of Oman indicated that the Straits of Hormez remained open at least through However, all 25X1
commercial vessels in the Shatt Al Arab appeared to be dead in the water, indicating a cessation of commercial
activity.
7. (S/D) At Iraqi and Iranian airfields, most of the bomb craters had been repaired and the airfields
were operational. BLINDER aircraft were dispersed to western Iraq and were also seen in North Yemen.
Iraqi CANDID transport aircraft were seen in North Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan.
Iraq/Iran Forward Area
Khorramshahr/Al Basrah Area
8. (S/D) Along the Shatt Al Arab, major elements of the Iraqi 5th Mechanized Infantry Division'
appeared to be still deployed along both banks of the river on Smoke precluded a detailed
description of force deployments.
9. (S/D) On continuing analysis revealed at least 43 general-purpose small tents set 25X1
up on the west side of a stadium in the center of Khorramshahr, approximately 1.5 nautical miles (nm)
southwest of Khorramshahr Barracks North re orted under attack on the same cover- 25X1
age. The tents, which were erected between I (probably house Iranian troops; however, 25X1
the Iraqis may have surrounded this area.
10. (S/D The Iraqi 1st Mechanized Infantry Division', partially imaged on I 25X1
was observed as far as 9.5 nm into Iranian territory (Figure 3). Divisional units observed consisted 25X1
of t nr a tank battalions, three mechanized infantry battalions (minus), and one field artillery (FA) battal-
ion. Those units are probably the rear elements of the division, because 44 field guns that had been
observed on imagery of were not present and had probably been moved forward, although 25X1
only 22 field guns were observed being moved forward. The Iranian tank, mechanized infantry, and FA
units observed on imagery of at 32-01-30N 047-45-OOE had withdrawn with all their equip-25X1
ment.

11. (S/D)I I An Iraqi armor brigade and a mechanized infantry brigade consisting of 25X1
five tank battalions, four mechanized infantry battalions, and two FA battalions were observed advancing
eastward toward Dezful 22 nm inside Iranian territory (Figure 4). The advance of this combined arms
force through a valley was being blocked by an Iranian force consisting of one tank company (plus), one
mechanized infantry company (minus), and one battery of M-109 self-propelled guns (SPGs) dug in along
a ridgeline controlling access to a small mountain pass at 32-22N 047-58E. Defensive fire observed from
the blocking force was probably light, because the advancing force remained in formation, while support
vehicles continued along the road closer to Dezful.
12. (S/D) An Iranian mechanized infantry company in reserve, consisting of 2 tanks and 7 armored
personnel carriers (APCs), and a probable motor transport unit of at least 30 trucks were deployed at
Dezful Highway Strip Airfield . West of this area, two tanks were positioned just off the
25X1
road across the river from the highway strip, apparently guarding access to the bridge. Four ct craters
i a
were in a field I nm east-southeast of the airfield, near Dezful Hawk Site I A28-35 (
25X1
13. (S/D) A second Iraqi tank force was observed in a battle with two Iranian tank companies at 32-
ION 047-54E (Figure 5). Because of the dust and smoke in the area and partial coverage, the size of the
Iraqi units could not be determined. An Iranian probable command post and a tank company in reserve
were deployed approximately 5.5 nm northeast of the two Iranian tank companies in and around an
abandoned Hawk site. A stick mast antenna had been erected in the administration area of Dezful Hawk
Site 3
14. (S/D) Two Iranian FA batteries, containing four M 109A I SPGs, one probable M548 ammuni-
tion carrier, and three field guns, and two 35mm Oerlikon antiaircraft artillery (AAA) sites were deployed
in firing battery in a ravine southeast of Dezful Hawk Site 3 and south of the main gate of Dezful Air
Warning (AW) Radar Facility
15. (S/D) Despite the heavy fighting occurring approximately 21 nm west and 28 nm southwest of
the barracks, major elements of the armored brigade (with the exception of a tank platoon, which had
departed since
Equipment for the brigade remained dispersed inside the installa- 25X1
d in garrison at Dezful Barracks and Brigade Headquarters 0 25X1
tion. Eight tanks, four trucks, and three unidentified vehicles (probably the platoon that deployed from
the barracks area) were parked nearby at the depot of Andimesk Railroad Station Yards and Shops 0 25X1
in downtown Dezfu 25X1
16. (S/D) The Iraqi armor and mechanized infantry brigades were observed advanc- 25X1
ing on the Iranian blocking force with two battalions of mechanized infantry supported by two tank
companies online (Figures 6 and 7). At the same time, a flanking force of two tank battalions supported by
two mechanized infantry companies was approaching the blocking force from the south (Figure 8). Most
of the Iranian force had withdrawn, leaving a smaller force of nine tanks, one APC, three field guns, and
three M-109 SPGs. Part of the withdrawn blocking force probably withdrew east to 32-21N 048-07E and
took up defensive positions at a major road junction, where six tanks and 15 APCs were newly positioned.
17. (S/D) The second Iraqi force, which was partially imaged on is robabl part of 25X1
the 1st Mechanized Infantry Division,' which was observed crossing the order on he lead 25X1
elements of this force were observed in battle on imagery of Eight destroyed armored 25X1
vehicles remained in this area from the battle that occurred on Iranian forces had retained 25X1
their positions, and the closest Iraqi forces were 1 nm to the west. Two Iraqi mechanized infantry
companies supported by two tank companies appeared to be attempting a flanking movement to the south.
The imaged part of this second force consisted of three tank battalions (minus), five mechanized infantry
battalions (plus), and one FA battalion.
18. (S/D) Some of the Iranian APCs and tanks that had been in reserve at Dezful Highway Strip
Airfield had probably moved southwest to join the Iranian blocking force at the road junction. Five APCs,
one tank, and the motor transport unit were still present.
19. (S/D) The command post, tank company in reserve, two FA batteries, and two 35mm AAA sites
near Dezful AW Radar Site remained unchanged from the previous day.
20. (S/D) In the Qasr-E Shirin area, major elements of the Iraqi 6th Armor Division' and remnants
of the Iranian ground force units were identified in the vicinity of Qasr-E Shirin, Iran (Figure 9) on
imagery of The city was flanked on three sides. Virtually no vehicular traffic was observed,
and the city appeared to be deserted. Iraqi forces did not appear to have entered the city and Iranian
ground force units appeared to control the hard-surfaced road that leads eastward to Karand, Iran.
Artillery craters were observed outside the city perimeter, but no evidence of artillery bombardment was
observed within the city.
21. (S/D) Iraqi ground force units included elements of three tank battalions, elements of two
mechanized infantry battalions, and at least one FA battalion (plus). Equipment observed included 92
tanks, 37 APCs, 20 field guns, and two ZSU-23/4 self-propelled antiaircraft (SPAA) guns.
22. (S/D) Iranian ground force units included elements of two tank companies and elements of an
APC-equipped mechanized infantry platoon. The forces were concentrated east of the city along the road
that leads to Pol E Zahab, Iran. (Continued p. 6)
