(S/D) This report updates the most recent' in a series of imagery-derived reports on the Iraq/Iran conflict and covers the period This report discusses deployed ground forces in the forward area, rear garrison units (Figure 1), airfields, naval bases, commercial shipping, POL facilities, and related activity. Military unit designators and subordination (where used) are derived from collateral sources.' Acronyms and abbreviations are defined in a glossary at the end of the report. Additional reports will be issued as the situation changes. 2. (S/D) Imagery of the forward areas of conflict during the reporting period showed that the Iraqi forces still controlled the city of Khorramshahr, north of the Karun River. The Iranians still controlled Abadan; however, the Iraqi forces had reinforced their tank brigade north and east of the city. Iraqi field logistical points were observed 45 nm southwest of Dezful along the Iraq/Iran border. 3. (S/D) Eight Iraqi and ten Iranian rear area garrisons/ facilities were imaged. Probable SCUD activity was observed near Shaibah, Iraq, and possible FROG equipment was observed in Iraq, northwest of Khorramshahr, Iran. In Iran, additional ground forces equipment from Hajjiabad area had departed the garrison. 4. (S/D) One Iraqi and 17 Iranian airfields were imaged. A 747 with possible canvas cover was seen at Tehran/Mehrabad Airfield. The runway at another airfield in the Tehran area was blocked by dirt piles. 5. (S/D) Naval activity was seen at one Iraqi and four Iranian naval/port facilities. 6. (S/D) Nine Iraqi and 18 Iranian POL facilities were imaged. New damage was seen at one Iraqi and three Iranian facilities. Increased air defenses were identified at a refinery in the Tehran area. 7. (S/D) Related activity included the observation of a large crowd of people and the repositioning of vehicles within the American Embassy compound in Tehran. The Iranian border transshipment points at Barzagan and Jolfa were also imaged. GROUND FORCES ACTIVITY Iraq/Iran Forward Areas Khorramshahr/Abadan Area 8. (S D) Iraqi forces remained in control of Khorramshahr, north of the Karun River Elements of an Iraqi mechanized infantry platoon were in the city, while a second mecha- nized infantry platoon, an artillery battery, and an AA battery were between 2 nm and 5 nm north of Khorramshahr. An engineer battalion was 7 nm west-northwest of the city, and an AA battery was 10 nm northwest. Iraqi units on the west bank of the Shatt Al Arab included one artillery battery, two possible mortar batteries, and an AA battery I nm southeast of Khorramshahr. Iraqi units on the west bank of the Shatt Al Arab opposite Abadan included one artillery battery, 2 nm southwest of the city, and three artillery battalions and three AA batteries, 6.5 nm southwest of the city. 9. (S/D) The Iraqi tank brigade reported north and east of Abadan had been reinforced by at least two mechanized infantry battalions, an artillery battalion, and two AA batteriesC Limits of coverage precluded the determination of the presence of additional Iraqi forces. 10. (S/D) Iranian forces observed in the Abadan area on included elements of a tank platoon, which remained just south of the Khorramshahr/Abadan bridge over the Karun River in a residential area, and seven occupied ZU-23 AA positions, which remained deployed around the airfield at Abadan. 11. (S/D) The Khorramshahr/Abadan area was partiall observed on those days remained unchanged on complete coverage y imaged 12. (S/D) Four Iraqi field logistics supply points were observed approximately 45 nm southwest of Dezful, Iran, and 35 nm northeast of Al Amarah, Iraq, along the Iraq/Iran border at 32-08-30N 047-48- 50E, 32-03-40N 047-38-OOE, 31-58-40N 047-28-50E, and 31-55-40N 047-32-30E Each of these supply points contained numerous vehicles in both revetted and unrevetted positions. One tank company, one mechanized infantry platoon, and numerous AA batteries were interspersed through- out the area. 13. Forty trucks remained dispersed in revetments around As Sulaymaniyah Barracks and Ammunition Depot A three-position AA site remained occupied, and no additional battle damage was observed. 19. (S/D) Thirty trucks in revetments and five trucks in the open were observed throughout Baliki- yan Military Camp Balikiyan is 34 nm northeast of Arbil and 61 nm north-northeast of Kirkuk. 20. (S/D) Sixty-eight trucks were parked throughout Rawanduz Barracks and Brigade no evidence of battle damage was observed. Rawanduz is 33 nm northeast of Arbil and 60 nm 21. (S/D) Two BTR-50 APC were observed on transporters in Hajjiabad Barracks and Brigade Headquarters in the Kermanshah area In addition, several cargo trucks appeared to be moving in Pout of the barracks area. Additional tanks from the two tank battalion areas and APCs from the mechanized infantry battalion area departed Remaining out of garrison were elements of two tank battalions, one mechanized infantry battalion, and one M109 SP howitzer battalion. This installation housed the 2d Iranian Armor Brigade of the 81st Armor Division. 22. (S D) Training activity was observed on at Tabriz Barracks and Training Center On both dates, approximately 45 people and several vehicles were at a small-arms firing range immediately south of the barracks area. Approximately 50 additional people were near an obstacle course in the southern portion of the facility A group of approximately the same size was in military formation on a road near the obstacle course on subsequent coverage No change in ground order of battle was observed on either date. Twenty-three tank transporter tra ers, 12 MAZ-537 trucks, and six cargo trucks were still dispersed in an open storage area. 23. (S/D) No unusual activity or changes were observed at seven ground forces installations in Tehran 24. (S/D) No battle damage was observed at Al Basrah Naval Base One Osa PTG, three P-6 PT, and three Yevgenya MSI were observed at the naval base. Two SO-1 PCS, one T-43 MSF, two Polnocny LSM, and one Split-B AX were in midstream near the naval base. Two P-6 PT were seen at a quay 2 nm upriver from the naval base. 30. (S/D) No additional damage was observed at Khorramshahr Naval Base Repair and Storage Facility One MK-III PB and one LCU remained at the quay on both dates. 31. (S/D) Nine La Combattante-JIB PTG (one inbound), one PF-103 PF, and seven MK-III PB were at Bushehr Naval Base Two of the La Combattante-IIB arrived at Bushehr, and one PF-103 PF and one MK-111 PB departed from the naval base Strait of Hormuz 32. (S/D) One Hengham LST and one Bandar Abbas AORL (civil markings) arrived at Bandar Abbas Port Facilities Suru 0 and one Bandar Abbas AORL (naval markings), one Kansan AWK, one PGM-71 PGM, and one PBR departed from the port Vessels in port--]included one Battle DDG, two Sumner DDG, two Vosper MK-5 (SAAM) FFG, one PGM-71 PGM, six MK-III PB, three PBR, two Hengham LST (one in the large graving dock), one Bandar Abbas AORL, one Kangan AWK, one Michaelangelo APB, one Amphion AR, and one ARD- T. The Amphion AR and the ARD-T had been moved to different quays 33. (S/D) In addition to the reported naval activity, commercial ship activity was also observed at this port. Six medium bulk cargo ships, six medium g =three o ships, and a small coastal freighter were in port three general and three bulk cargo ships and the coastal freighter arrived in port. Four medium general cargo ships and one medium bulk cargo ship departed during the same time period. Three tankers, one container ship, and two medium general cargo ships were in a holding area in the Gulf, south of the harbor. Only two of the tankers were observed on partial coverage of this areaONo military deck cargo was observed on any of the merchant ships. 34. (S/D) No military activity was observed on Tunb Island (Jazireh Ye Tanb E Bozorg, or in the vicinity of the island Shatt Al Arab COMMERCIAL SHIPPING 35. (S/D) The Shatt Al Arab from 30-35-30N 047-46-OOE to 30-18-ION 048-18-40E, including Al Basrah Port Facilities, Iraq Abu Flus Port Facilities, Ira Khorram- shahr Port Facilities, Iran and Abadan Port Facilities, Iran was imaged Five tankers, two container ships, one bulk carrier, 47 freighters, 33 coastal/small freighters, and three ARD-D were either at the port facilities or in midriver. 36. (S/D) At Al Basrah Port Facilities, Iraq, 14 medium freighters (including one Leninskiy Komso- mol), two container ships, one medium tanker, and two coastal small freighters were at the quay. One coastal/small freighter arrived at the quay this ship was moored in midriver, 1 nm downstreamONo battle damage was observed at the facility. 37. (S/D) One freighter left the quay at Abu Flus Port Facilities, Iraq, and was moored in midriver. Three freighters remained at the quay; no battle damage was 38. (S/D) Two freighters remained at the quay at Khorramshahr Port Facilities, Iran. No additional battle damage was observed. One freighter was still riding low in the water perpendicular to and appar- ently blocking the channel immediately south of the port. A coastal/small freighter was alongside. One coastal/small freighter was riding low in the water 1 nm north of the port facility near the Iraqi shore, 39. (S/D) One coastal/small freighter remained at the quay at Abadan Port Facilities, Iran. No additional battle damage was observed. One coastal/small freighter remained in the water 1 nm north of the port, and nine coastal/small freighters were riding low in the water I nm southeast of the port. 40. (S/D) a shorter section of the Shatt Al Arab from 30-27-15N 048-06-20E to 30- 21-SON 048.10-40E, including Khorramshahr Port Facilities, Iran, had been imaged. New damage included at least seven POL tanks 72,500-barrel capacity was destroyed and two POL tanks were damaged 25X1 and two pipeline segments on fire at Abadan Petroleum Refinery NIOC. Also one POL tank with a 48. __(S/D) Increased evidence of damage was observed at the two POL facilities in Abadan This lowers the total storage capacity of the facility from the original 16-million-barrel storage 25X1 capacity to no more than 15,147,500 barrels. 25X1 49. (S/D) at Abadan Petroleum Products Storage and Pump- 25X1 ing Station Transport, nine POL storage tanks with a total capacity of 952,500 barrels were destroyed, and 25X1 four POL tanks were damaged. This reduced the total capacity of the facility from the original 14,030,500- barrel storage capacity to no more than 8,708,000 barrels. At least six POL tanks continued to burn at this facility, and fires were observed on three pipeline segments. 41. (S/D) Three probable Wellington LCMA, three bulk cargo ships, three general car o shi s one small tanker, numerous barges, and small craft were at Bandar-E Shahpur Port Facilities 25X1 The bulk cargo ships (two offloading cargo onto trucks) have arrived 25X1 Two MSC-292 MSC, two Cape MSI, a container ship, and the Pula-class Soviet merchant ship departed )IZva A small vessel had capsized and was beached at the foot of 25X1 the bulk-loading pier (Figure 6). 42. (S/D) Other activity observed in and around the port facility consisted of three Field artillery pieces (in tow) and three AAA guns in the rail yard and three AA guns, six AA machine guns, numerous tents, and personnel near the transshipment area. The mobile electronics site was still in the same area. One RH-53 helicopter was observed in the transshipment area, An additional AA site was positioned on the northwestern edge of the facility. Fifty-two cargo trucks were newly dispersed in an open storage area at the north edge of the port facilities. Ten cargo trucks, 30 light utility vehicles, four vans, and one sedan were on railcars. 43. (S/D) Three medium general cargo ships, one small general cargo ship, and the Raffaello APB 25X1 were moored at Bushehr Port Facilities one of the 25X1 medium general cargo ships had arrived and another departed. 25X1 44. (S D) Seven bulk cargo ships and two small freighters were observed at Bandar-E Pahlavi Port Facilities on the Caspian Sea Eight bulk cargo ships and two coast- al/small freighters were observed Analysis of the crane configuration and the number of holds on the ships indicated that at least seven of the ships either departed the port and were replaced by other ships or changed positions along the quay. 45. (S/D) One general-purpose cargo ship arrived at Bandar-E Pahlavi Naval Base and Naval School on the Caspian Sea 46. (S/D) Nine Iraqi and I8 Iranian POL-related facilities were observed during the reporting period with new damage to one Iraqi and three Iranian facilities (Figure 7 and Table 2). Iraq 47. (S/D) one 129,509-barrel-capacity tank was damaged at northern Rumailah Central Gas Oil Separation Plant, 25 nm west of Al Basrah. Prior to the war, this facility had 12 POL storage tanks with a storage capacity of 972,438 barrels. 50. (S/D) At Khorramshahr Petroleum Storage South, 14 POL tanks were newly damaged 25X1 Two of the tanks were burning. 25X1 51. (S/D) Rey Petroleum Refinery and Storage near Tehran was still undamaged and was opera- 25X1 tional0 However, increased defenses were discernible. Four Rapier SAM sites, one 35mm 25X1 AA gun site, three ZU-23 AA sites, two probable ZU-23 AA sites, and one probable mobile AD unit were deployed around the facility. Two of the Rapier SAM sites appeared to have been deployed on the northwestern and southeastern sides of the facility the two additional Rapier SAM sites (one on the northwestern side and one on the southwestern side of the installation), the 35mm AA gun site (southeast of the facility), and the mobile AD unit had been added. Approximately 235 POL trucks were aligned at the northernmost entrance to the facility, and 18 more were aligned at the southernmost entrance 0. This was the first observation of a demonstration occurring inside the embassy compound since the seizure of the hostages exactly one year ago. 53. S D Some repositioning of vehicles within the compound also occurred Two buses and a probable van were parked near the main compound gate buses and possibly the van may have been moved from the parking area in the northern part of the corn ound The buses and van were removed from the gate and two buses and a possible van were seen in the northern parking area. However, these vehicles did not appear to be the same vehicles which had been near the main gate. An increase in the number of sedans was also observed in the northern parking area. 14 sedans were present, only seven sedans were observed. 54. (S/D) No unusual activity or changes were observed at the American Consulate Tabriz 55. (S/D) Evidence of fuel shortages continued to be observed throughout Iran. Unusually long gaslines of both commercial and private vehicles were observed in at least 13 cities. At least 220 trucks and automobiles were in a gasline at Bandar-E Mashur 56. (S/D) The major border transshipment point on the Iran/Turkey border near Bazargan, Iran, appeared to be open and operational on 6 November. Approximately 285 trucks and 200 sedans were on the Iranian side of the border, while approximately 110 trucks were inside Turkey. When the transship- ment point was last observed0 413 trucks were in Iran and 180 trucks were in Turkey. 57. (S/D) Increased activity was observed at the major transshipment point on the Iran/USSR border.
