OF PAGES 2 REQUIREMENT Iw,?. RD REFERENCE:; 1. Three concrete bunkers were constructed on hills in the northern part of Ruzhitsa, Elkhovo Okbliya, in 1940-1941; these bunkers are still there. In 1952 earth fortifications (trenches) and underground shelters were built on the hills where the bunkers are located. The trenches extended in a zigzag direction towards Golyamo Krushevo (N 42-12; E 26-56), Elkhovo Okoliya, and their depth was about 1.20 meters,. However, because of rain and other weather conditions, they began to fill with water and collapse. In the summer of 1955, they were cleaned, but later they were again filled with water. The underground shelters were made of wood and dirt; however, some of them have collapsed because the wood began to decay, and some of them are now filled with water. 2. Concrete bunkers and trenches are located on the'hills north of Gorska Polyana (N 42-07; E 26-56), Elkhovo Okoliya; they, too, are filled with water, and some have collapsed. 3. There is a gun position on a hill about one kilometer to the northwest of Ruzhitsa. In addition, there are some machine gun nests at certain commanding points in this fortified area. 4. Each year during this summer months, some reserves are subjected to 30 or 45 days of training.,' No one in Ruzhitsa had been called for reserve service by May 1956- 1. Border Fortifications 2. One highway connects Ruzhitsa with the Elkhovo-Burgas highway, and it is about three hilometers long; b. The , other highway connects Ruzhitsa to Vulchi Izvor (N 42-09; E 26-55) and thence to Gorska Polyana. These two are double-lane highways paved with pebbles. The highways are in good condition at present and are open to traffic in all seasons. In severe winters the. highways are blocked by snow which is quickly cleared away by peasants, and the roads are opened to traffic. There Are no industrial establishments on these highways. 6. On the north side of Ruzhitsa, on the highway which connects Ruzhitsa to the Elkhovo-Burgas highway, there is a concrete bridge abc::t 10 meters long, built on stone foundations. There is water under the bridge in all seasons. However, if the bridge were to be destroyed, it would be possible to ford the river. Even the heaviest trucks are able to use this bridge. 7. In addition to the two highways mentioned, there are dirt roads leading from Ruzhitsa to the nearby villages of Golyamo Krushevo, Bolyarovo (N 42-09; E 26-49), Malko Sharkovo (N 42906; E 26~vpl), Voden (N 42-04; E 26F-)54), and Gorska Polyana. These are one lane roads. In summer, the roads can be used by small vehicles and trucks can even use the Ruzhitsa-Bolyarovo dirt road; however, in winter, it is impassible for vehicles to use the dirt roads.
