1. Three concrete bunkers were constructed on hills in the northern part of
Ruzhitsa, Elkhovo Okbliya, in 1940-1941; these bunkers are still there.
In 1952 earth fortifications (trenches) and underground shelters were built
on the hills where the bunkers are located. The trenches extended in a
zigzag direction towards Golyamo Krushevo (N 42-12; E 26-56), Elkhovo
Okoliya, and their depth was about 1.20 meters,. However, because of rain
and other weather conditions, they began to fill with water and collapse.
In the summer of 1955, they were cleaned, but later they were again filled
with water. The underground shelters were made of wood and dirt; however,
some of them have collapsed because the wood began to decay, and some
of them are now filled with water.
2. Concrete bunkers and trenches are located on the'hills north of Gorska
Polyana (N 42-07; E 26-56), Elkhovo Okoliya; they, too, are filled with
water, and some have collapsed.
3. There is a gun position on a hill about one kilometer to the northwest of
Ruzhitsa. In addition, there are some machine gun nests at certain
commanding points in this fortified area.
4. Each year during this summer months, some reserves are subjected to 30 or
45 days of training.,' No one in Ruzhitsa had been called for reserve
service by May 1956-

Roads
There are two highways which lead from Ruzhitsa, as follows:
a. One highway connects Ruzhitsa with the Elkhovo-Burgas highway,
and it is about three hilometers long;
b. The , other highway connects Ruzhitsa to Vulchi Izvor (N 42-09; E 26-55)
and thence to Gorska Polyana.
These two are double-lane highways paved with pebbles. The highways are
in good condition at present and are open to traffic in all seasons. In
severe winters the. highways are blocked by snow which is quickly cleared
away by peasants, and the roads are opened to traffic. There Are no
industrial establishments on these highways.
6. On the north side of Ruzhitsa, on the highway which connects Ruzhitsa to
the Elkhovo-Burgas highway, there is a concrete bridge abc::t 10 meters
long, built on stone foundations. There is water under the bridge in all
seasons. However, if the bridge were to be destroyed, it would be
possible to ford the river. Even the heaviest trucks are able to use
this bridge.
7. In addition to the two highways mentioned, there are dirt roads leading from
Ruzhitsa to the nearby villages of Golyamo Krushevo, Bolyarovo (N 42-09;
E 26-49), Malko Sharkovo (N 42906; E 26~vpl), Voden (N 42-04; E 26F-)54), and
Gorska Polyana. These are one lane roads. In summer, the roads can be
used by small vehicles and trucks can even use the Ruzhitsa-Bolyarovo
dirt road; however, in winter, it is impassible for vehicles to use
the dirt roads.
